2 birds with one stone?

Heard this: If the Cubs finish their deal for Brian Roberts, or trade for Felipe Lopez, Mark DeRosa will want an opportunity to compete for the everyday job at shortstop.

Oh please let the Roberts deal happen, PLEASE. I am a HUGE Pie fan, BUT I think that this year is one of our few chances with this core group of players, maybe only, to win the World Series, I might put him in the Roberts deal if we could get Crisp or Figgins.

Crisp/Figgins+DeRosa+Roberts > Pie+Theriot+DeRosa

EDIT: Long term view I really would hope we could keep Pie, but I'm all about winning the World Series NOW at any cost.

Where has Figgins talk been brought up lately? and secondly, why would they want someone like Pie when they have 18* different guys that could play CF?

Also again just say no to coco crisp he isn't any good and boston wants the world for him.

Nowhere. All I was saying is that I would trade Pie but ONLY if we had a good replacement for him.

Not that it matters a lick, and I don't believe it, but the Pads' announcer on XM just said the Roberts deal was done, and MacPhail is simply deciding among the pool of Cub players now.

Just wanted to bump this thread seeing as how it was in jeopardy of falling into sixth place in the transactions page.

Can't let that happen.

C'mon, people!

Is that something like taking one for the team ?

Somebody claiming to have talked to a Royals scout posted this at OH.

http://forum.orioleshangout.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60778

My dad is good friends with one of the heads of scouting for the Kansas City Royals. Anyways, he found out I was big Orioles fan and told my dad that we should eat dinner sometime, which we did last night. I had about an hour to pick his brain and here is what I came out with...

If the Roberts deal does not go down by the end of ST, it will not go down at all. Not at the break, not anytime during the year. He also said that if the deal didn't go down, he didn't think the Cubs would try again next year because they would be so digruntled. Apparently, Hendry is taking a lot of heat so this could be completled quickly.

He doesn't expect Veal and Ceda to be in the deal, and said if he was given the choice, he would take Ceda. He isn't impressed with Veal.

The Cubs are indeed growing sour on Felix Pie. It's not that they don't believe he will be good, but instead they do not want to wait three years to pan out when they are trying to compete now. He said it was about 50/50 Pie could be in the Roberts deal. The Cubs are talkign with the Sox about acquiring Crisp and if the Angels are willing to take some of the contract, they wouldn't mind Gary Matthews either.

I know this is beating a dead horse but I asked him what he though about the Orioles haul on the Bedard trade. He said that word around the league was that it was one of the best overall hauls a team has acquired in the past five years. He thinks that the real sleeper in the deal is Butler, and that he has the stuff to be a number one.

I think it was Roch who reported that a KC scout was at some of the Orioels spring training games. He confirmed it was true, but obviously because of his status, he said he couldn't disclose the information but he said they were talkign with MacPhail about an aquisition of a possible veteran. He made a point of emphasis to say that it was just TALKING, not actual dicussions, but that something could happen surprisingly at the break or start of next year.

I asked him if he though the Orioles would buy out Gibbons contract jsut to get rid of him. He said absolutely not, because the buy out would be something like 13 million (he wasn't sure, but he said that it was pretty colse to that muh). He said they are going to play him no matter what to see if they can get any production out of him.

There are actually about four teams interested in acquiring Payton, not just the Cubs. I guess declining right handed outfielders are hard to find this year?

I forgot to add thsi in the original post. But I asked about Tex and if he would be an Oriole next year. He said that of all the teams, the Orioles will most likely press the most for him, but at the same time, he is unsure if they will get him. He said just because he is from this area really doesn't mean much. He personally thought we would end up with him though.

Roberts, 2B

Fukudome, RF

Lee, 1B

Ramirez, 3B

Soriano, LF

DeRosa, SS

Soto, C

Crisp, CF

meh, I guess I could learn to eventually live with that.

This was a blurb in some newspaper about a month ago. They probably got it from there.

What did Mark Grace call it again? Slumpbusting?

As has been discussed to death, the Roberts trade is a significantly better deal *if* DeRosa gets the starting job at SS as his infield partner. Now you're basically replacing Theriot's production with Roberts, and that is more than a minor improvement.

Is it possible the O's want Theriot and that's what's holding up this blockbuster of a thread....I mean trade?

What's holding up the deal is that the O's don't know what they want, they just know it always needs to be "more."

This is also why they suck at baseball.

What's holding up the deal is the lack of a sure-thing prospect from the Cubs. The Orioles really don't know what they are getting from the Cubs in any of the myriad projected scenarios. They're likely getting 4 young guys, lots of potential, but nobody that definitively slots as a full-time player or rotation guy.

This uncertainty won't change, as the Cubs don't have the missing piece they crave. What's infuriating is that they won't decide whether or not to take the gamble on the players available. At some point you either dive in or climb down. Quit standing on the bloody board quivering like a moron.
