I wonder if there is any chance the Cubs can convince the O's to take Tim Lahey over Jose Ceda? :-k

Can Lahey be traded?

Yes.

Nothing new here, but I haven't seen it posted. From usatoday.com:

Roberts trade rumors revived

Posted 3/4/2008 11:30 AM EST

As the Chicago Cubs were preparing for today's game against the Milwaukee Brewers, the front office was reportedly working hard to nail down a deal to acquire Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts.

The Cubs have been dealing with injury issues all spring with Alfonso Soriano, Mark DeRosa and Aramis Ramirez all missing time already. Roberts would give the team a true leadoff hitter and an everyday second baseman ... so the deal makes sense from their perspective, as well as from the rebuilding Orioles'.

Manager Lou Piniella didn't have much to say today, preferring to leave those questions for general manager Jim Hendry, although he did admit "we have scouts watching not only Baltimore, but quite a few teams."

SI.com's John Heyman suggests pitchers Sean Marshall and Sean Gallagher, outfielder Matt Murton and infielder Ronny Cedeno are among the players the Cubs are thinking about including in a package for Roberts.

When asked about the trade rumors that have been circulating online, Piniella said, "The only thing I do on the Internet is trade stocks once in a while."

How about infielders? "No I don't trade infielders," he laughed, "and certainly, I don't read sports."

He admitted the Cubs have scouts watching the Orioles, among other teams. "We'll just have to wait and see what happens, if anything at all."

The Cubs are in a "win now" mode since they are celebrating 100 years since their last World Series Championship... I don't know if Brian Roberts gets us the fans a trophy this year, but I am tired of the Cubs playing it safe so if there is even a possibility that he helps get us the trophy then I am for it. The strategy of hoarding young talent that does not pay off is frustrating... I am self employed and sometimes you have to take chances and be willing to take risks to win. I for one am tired of the Cubs playing small... go for it and let the chips fall where they may. Just get on with a decision one way or another already... just my $.02

I'm not sure if anybody is familiar with Jason Churchill or not, but he runs a site called http://www.prospectinsider.com. He's mostly a Mariners guy, but has contacts with the Orioles as well. Over the past month or so I've been in a little bit of contact with him through e-mails regarding the Roberts situation. I hadn't heard from him in awhile, so I sent him an e-mail yesterday asking what he thinks the chances are of the Roberts trade going through, and he said this:

Guarantee it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it last another 7-10 days, though.

I sent him another e-mail asking if it was cool if I shared the info with this board, and he responded by saying it was fine as long as I gave a link to Prospect Insider. He also had this to say:

Update: Snag hit in talks, so say the Orioles, but it appears this is the kind of "snag" that ends up pushing a deal through, according to my source.

I just got this e-mail and I have no idea what that means, so I sent him an e-mail to clarify. I'll let you guys know what he says.

Any idea as to what that means?

I haven't asked him. The only reason I asked him about Roberts was because he had an Orioles contact. I have no idea if he'd know anything about the Cubs.

Ok, he responded.

It's one of those non-snag snags, where talks have again - for the 34th time - stalled because of a disagreement on the value of a player or two... but I believe it's posturing by the Orioles.

But both teams know it's getting late and in the end Chicago is going to have to make the decision: Give up the three guys Baltimore wants, or live with what you have.

One Cubs rep predicts this goes into May, but I think they work it out within a few weeks. I think it gets done by the end of the Spring schedule, and the Cubs do, too.

Ugh.

Plus B Roberts is a South Carolina boy, and I am a huge fan, so I have a little biased opinion when it comes to that.
He's even more a North Carolina guy, born in Durham and completing his college baseball career at UNC after transferring from USC.

Can Lahey be traded?

He can, but the team trading for him would have to keep him on the 25-man roster all year just like the Cubs would or else lose him back to his original team (Toronto, if I recall correctly). Remember, just last year the Cubs picked Josh Hamilton in the Rule 5 draft, then traded him to Cincinnati.

Hendry denies that Roberts talks have heated up:

CUBS IN BRIEF: Team denies Roberts trade talks have resumed

March 5, 2008

BY GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com

MESA, Ariz. -- The Cubs still want to add at least one hitter by Opening Day, but multiple high-ranking team officials shot down Internet and radio reports this week that trade talks with the Baltimore Orioles regarding second baseman Brian Roberts have resumed in recent days.

In fact, one team source said Tuesday that the Cubs and Orioles haven't talked in more than a week and the sides are no closer to a deal than they were when camp opened -- which is not close at all.

2 thumbs up for Kosuke

General manager Jim Hendry wouldn't address specific teams or players but said reports that things are ''heating up'' with any team are wrong.

''There have been no active talks in any trade situation in the last five, six days,'' Hendry said. ''We will continue to scout all the teams in Florida and Arizona, and if possible we will try to improve our ballclub by the end of camp.''

Meanwhile, manager Lou Piniella again raised the depth issues the Cubs have among non-pitchers, a situation exacerbated by short-term health issues with regulars Aramis Ramirez (shoulder), Alfonso Soriano (finger) and Mark DeRosa (heart procedure).

But that's not expected to have a bearing on how hard the Cubs go after possible trades for the infielder and outfielder they're trying to add. If a deal gets done, it's not likely to happen until teams get fresh scouting reports on younger major-leaguers and prospects over the next week or two of games.

As for the Internet trade rumors, Piniella said: ''The only thing I do on the Internet is trade stocks once in a while. I don't trade infielders.''

You are actually wrong there. You have it flip-flopped. His dad was the head coach at UNC when he was playing there, then his dad got fired. So he transfered from UNC to USC, where he graduated. He did play more years at North Carolina then he did at South Carolina, but he graduated (well, don't know if he graduated) but he finished his career before going to the minors at South Carolina.

The only thing more laughable than this whole ordeal is that people are actually falling for this garbage over and over again.
