There's something a little weird about Roberts' progression. As a 23 yr. old in '01 he put up an OPS of .625. He followed that up with seasons of .605, .704 and .720. Then at 27 yrs. old his OPS jumped to .902 due mostly to a spike in SLG to .515 (up from .376). That's an awfully big jump after ~1500 ABs.

Makes me a little wary.

Markakis, however..........I would give a king's ransom for that guy if he were truly available.

And this is why we should know who is cheating and who isn't. If I were a GM I'd hire Jim Rockford for 200 bucks a day plus expenses and get the dirt on who's cheating and who ain't.

But Rockford will get the word on the street from Angel Martin and that always leads to trouble! :D

Ah yes but the hooker (Rita Moreno) would get him out of it.

If Roberts can play SS, and I'll bet he's as good defensively as Theriot, it would be a bad move depending on the cost.

Roberts indicated just before that season that he had had corrective eye surgery, as well as, was wearing the contacts that enhanced the color red, so he was able to pick up the pitch almost as soon as it started moving. He followed up that great year with a .757, and an .809, so to me that doesn't explain it very well.

I'm a big time believer in the better usage of your eyes when it comes to hitting and I wonder if he also gained any strength too? Contacts don't make you stronger and steroids do help you see better. Just curious because I'd hate to make a big trade for a Brady Anderson type player.

I'd hazard a wildly speculated guess that it is corrective eye surgery, combined with a career year. His next 2 years are still at his past levels or better, but nowhere near as good. I'd think at this point, he'd have been caught with PEDs, if they were still aiding him. Was he battling injuries either of those years? I seem to recall him having had some leg injury in 06, that he played at less than 100%. But I very easily could be mistaken.

I'm pretty sure he was injured for a portion of 06, and he may have played hurt. Ideally, I would like to see him play SS, but if we were to get him, I bet Jim/Lou will use him like they wanted to use Kaz.

With Roberts at SS and leading off (Without giving up Pie), then sign Fukudome, this team would be lethal.

Roberts - SS

Fukudome - RF

DLee - 1B

Soriano - LF

ARam - 3B

Soto - C

DeRosa - 2B

Pie - CF

Yes, it's a very small sample size, but in his rookie year, in 51 games at SS, he made 14 errors. The last time he played short, in 03, for 2 whole games, he made 2 errors. This trend CONTINUED his minor league issues at shortstop. He hadn't played FT at SS sine 2001, where his SS at AAA experiment failed. Tejada didn't force his shift to 2nd. Roberts started playing there as a regular for Baltimore in 03, before Tejada signed. And he was so stellar at shortstop he couldn't replace Mike Bordick or Delvi Cruz. A career .933FP in the Majors at short, and a remarkably similar .932FP in the minors. I think his SS days are behind him.

For the second consecutive winter meetings, the Orioles are involved in serious trade talks involving second baseman Brian Roberts.

Several baseball sources today said the Chicago Cubs, a frequent trade partner of the Orioles and a team that needs a left-handed hitter, are aggressively pursuing Roberts, the Orioles' lone 2007 All-Star.

One baseball source said that there is a three-player deal on the table that would include a starting pitcher coming back to the Orioles. Although no specifics have been revealed, the Orioles in the past have been high on lefty Rich Hill and right-hander Sean Gallagher.

I wouldn't trade Hill for him. Maybe Gallagher.

Well, let's hope it's Marshall if they are giving up 3 guys.

Let's assume we get Fukudome and Roberts. Where's Mark DeRosa in this scenario, exactly?

2b. I'd put Roberts at SS. Everyone else is playing out of position, so why not do the same with Roberts.

Marshall & Gallagher for Roberts

Super sub. He really doesn't have a set position, he could play everywhere. He won't start, but he probably could still end up with 300 at bats.

Wrong. A guy with a .380 OBP should be playing everyday. Period. 300 at bats isn't nearly enough, unless of course he had 300 at bats and 600 plate appearances.

Per my last estimate the Cubs have spent $106M on 21 players and have $14M left to spend assuming a budget of $120M.

Roberts makes $6.3M in 2008 (and $8M in 2009). If the Cubs get him, they would only have $7.7M left to spend - that certainly won't be enough for Fukudome, who I heard might be looking at perhaps 3 years and $39M ($13M per year).

So, in order to get Fukudome and Roberts, (I'm assuming Baltimore will not be picking up any cash on Roberts), one of two things need to occur:

(1) Budget increased to $125M

(2) Cubs shed $5.3M someplace else (dump Dempster or Marquis)

Now, it's getting interesting.

Jeebus please!

This would be my ideal (well at least realistically ideal) scenario to land Roberts and Fukudome, please Jim please. However (not saying I agree), the Cubs would IMO almost certainly not bat them 1-2. We like to spread our lefties out.

Of course, no Hill though. I'd try not to include Gallagher, but i'd budge if it was neccessary.

I feel the same way, but I made my post based on what I think will happen, not what I think should happen. If it was up to me, we would be trying to get a starting shortstop, not another starting second baseman.
