Wow, right before the weekend. The outdoor barbecues will be abuzz of such an impact acquisition.

I congratulate Cardinals fans everywhere.

This is just fantastic news.

Yep. First the Astros sign Matsui, and now this. Great 24 hours for Cub fans.

You'll note the other bit of info in that article: The Cards key offseason acquisition appears to be..........

CHRIS CAPUANO! WOOOOO!

Colby Rasmus for Chris Capuano! I'm all for it.

Rolen is the rumor. Still terrible.

Wow, between this signing and Houston getting Matsui, it's like the GMs of the Central want to remain the worst division in baseball.

I don't want Rasmus on the Brew.

Cardinals looking at 72 wins it appears.

If that.

What is the plan in The STL? They look like they are ripe for a tear-down, particularly on the pitching staff. Do they simply prefer to try and luck into the playoffs via Pujols and (when healthy) Carpenter?

It's official.

Cardinals agreed to terms with shortstop Cesar Izturis, who had been with the Pirates, on a one-year contract.

The Cards go from World Series winners to sub-.500 team and their response is a clear downgrade at shortstop? Izturis isn't necessarily guaranteed of playing regularly in David Eckstein's place, but it looks like the Cards would prefer to spend their money on pitching. Izturis hit .258/.302/.315 in 314 at-bats for the Cubs and Pirates last season. He's at .259/.295/.334 in his career. Also, he's not quite what he once was defensively, though he's still clearly above average. Ideally, he'd be a reserve on a contender. Nov. 30 - 1:57 pm et

It seems to me that the plan is for a rebuilding year. Develop some guys like Hoffpauir, Rasmus and Perez for late callups, avoid spending in a mediocre FA class, get a few long term pieces via trade and make a move in '09.

I wouldn't be heartbroken if that was the plan, I just want to know for sure that there is a plan and these signings aren't from a GM who thinks these guys like Izturis and Piniero are actually good.

I wonder how Pujols feels about a rebuilding year.

I really dont have a huge problem with this deal. The Cards dont have the young talent to get Tejada and there are really no other SS out there. I would much rather have Izturis for a year then Eckstein for 3 years.

I'm interested to see the amount of the 1 year contract. If it is for less than 1MM, I don't think it is a bad deal. It would allow them to look for someone better during the offseason. If it is for $5MM or so, the Cardinals are out of their mind.

So, will Cesar sneak up on Jim Edmonds to give him the ol' Aramis Ramirez Special, or will Jim ask for it himself?

Or, will Jim sneak up on Cesar first? We need to follow this closely.
