Awesome news. It's about time we got some good news.

The man-love for Kerry continues to grow. Very cool that he's coming back despite having 2-year offers on the table.

Id rather have him for 2/5 or 2/6 than 1/4.

As I understood it, the Cubs were not among the teams offering 2 years although I might have misunderstood.

excellent dec ision on both parts. Wood isn't locked down and can get bigger bucks if he actually stays healthy and if he doesn't the Cubs can say goodbye. I am not a Wood fan, but he did have an impressive finish. Let's see if he can have an impressive start to finish now.

Yeah, and I'd take ARod at 5/50 million. Can you give Hendry any credit?

and at this point we don't know which side wanted only the 1 year. Given the market this offseason for relievers, its possible that Kerry could pitch an entire season in 07(and at a high level) from pen, and command a much bigger deal next offseason.

So now does Hendry trade Dempster?

I would think no. I get the impression Lou wasn't keen on having 3 lefties in the rotation, always worrying about going with a lefty back to back. I think he wants a righty, and Dempster fits that bill in the short-term. I believe Marshall is likely on the block, and they will wait and see if Dempster can build up his value by pitching well in the first half, and if they can get something out of Gallagher, Prior or others by then.

No one from the minors to take that role and trade both to get an impact RF or SS? I would think that Marshall, Dempster, Theriot/Cedeno and Murton plus maybe a prospect could get Tejada and sign Fukedome. You could have Pie in CF in this case and just get a journeyman righty CF.

I think the point was, if Boston was offering 2/5 to Kerry, couldn't we have just matched that. Because a low amount is a less risky contract. And if Kerry IS gonna come back, and get better. 2/5 is MUCH better than 1/4. Because You'll already have him locked up for next year for only 2.5. Whereas if he does great this year and you just paid him $4 mil. How much do you expect him to take next year?

It's just another example of Hendry's bad spending and lack of long term plans. That was the point, I think.

I don't think he's ripping Hendry. If the choice was 2/5-6 or 1/4, I think a team would prefer the 2 year deal. If that was all he was getting offered, Wood really wasn't giving up much of anything. I'm sure getting to free agency 1 year earlier is worth more than $1-2 guaranteed millions, especially to a player like Wood, who has tremendous upside earning potential and already has a ton of cash in the bank.

Gee, thats a great analogy. Did ARod sign for 5/50 or have any offers for that amount?

I wasn't commenting anything on Hendry, just saying that I'd rather have him for 2/5 or 2/6 than 1/4. Those were the other offers that were out there. I'm sure from Kerry's perspective, the 1/4 was the most attractive. So lets all deify Kerry for taking the best offer on the table.

It's not impossible, but I just don't see it happening. I think they look forward to having that veteran right arm in the rotation, and I also doubt Dempster has much trade value. He's never been any good as a starter, and he was just okay as a reliever. $5m is relativley inexpensive for a mediocre veteran starter, but I'd bet most teams would rather not trade anything of value for such a player, considering there's nothing to support hopes that he'll be any good.

In other words, I think he's more valuable in the Cubs minds than he is to any potential trading partner.

I see your point but in a package he could be quite attractive depending on the needs of the other team.

I do think that Wood was a focus point for Hendry and the building block for what he was going to do once he signed or didn't sign.

Wood will go down as my favorite Cub ever. I'm not sure why, but man-love for him is unrivaled. He just oozes class, desire, loyalty. Stud all around. I love Kerry Wood.

I haven't had a favorite Cub in a while. Jenkins, Madlock and then Ryne....since that, nothing.

This is great news. Of course if he performs to the level that we desire, then he will again break the bank in 2009.

I'm curious if this move is for him to be a starter or a closer? I'm sure something was said along those lines during the negotiations.

I assume the plan is for him to remain in the bullpen in 2008, but that's just speculation on my behalf.

Excellent Kerry, I really appreciate his loyalty to this team. Most players would head elsewhere after years of injuries and trying years, but Kerry is a team player. He may never be an All Star or a Hall of Famer again like he was projected to be way back when, but he will always be a memorable Cub to me.
