In response to an online chat where Keith Law badmouthed Joe Crede, WSI produced gems such as...

Who in the hell is Keith Law?

He loses all credibility when saying RBI are meaningless. Sure, RBI totals partially depend on circumstances outside of the players control (like who bats in front of him), but they are most certainly not completely meaningless.

Saying Joe Crede stinks is the biggest amount of bull**** I've ever heard. Is Keith Law Dayn Perry's understudy? Another unqualified ******* spewing forth.

Anyone who wouldn't a take a healthy Joe Crede is absoultey nuts, we saw what he can do in 2006 and he had an amazing second half of '05...the biggest question mark with him right now is his health. That is the only reason that I think a team would be hesistant to acquire him.

This is what happens when you let statistical nut cases try to run baseball.

You're friend is right...Crede's bat finally came around in the second half of '05 and stayed around for all of '06. He is also one of the best defensive third basemen in the game. Aramis on the other hand...he's a mini-Manny at third base. Plays when he wants to, when he doesn't, he doesn't run out ground balls or pop flys, gets lots of meaningless hits when the team is well out of the game and is just a god awful defensive third baseman. A healthy Crede in a heart beat.

Crede doesn't suck. Far from it. He unfortunately has a creaky back and an inconsistent bat. He's well above average defensively (or was, anyway - we'll see how he plays coming back from the long back-related layoff) and he doesn't make ridiculous money (although Boras wants to change that).

He's a very solid player when healthy. If the Cubs didn't have Aramis, I'd love a healthy Joe Crede in Cubbie blue.

Career BA of .305 - what's wrong with that?

Oh wait, that's his career OBP.

Yep, that's the guy.

My opinion holds - if the Cubs didn't have Ramirez and Crede's back was healthy, I'd love to see him at 3B for the Cubs.

The worst thing about Joe Crede is Scott Boras.

Well that, his .305 career OBP, his .751 career OPS, and the fact that 2002 and 2006 were his only decent years.

But other than that he'd be GREAT! :D

Thanks, those links all worked great, as did the last one you provided.

I know Crede doesn't measure up to all the fantastic third basemen the Cubs have had historically, but I still liked what I saw of him before his back went out. He was progressing and developing in the year and a half before his back problems limited him in 2007, much the way Aramis has developed as a defensive player since his Pittsburgh years. Some people still say that Aramis sucks defensively, too, and they're wrong.

It's obvious that the Cubs won't acquire Crede, but there's a big difference between sucking and being a servicable major-league ballplayer, and that's the point I'm trying to make. He's not the best all-around 3B in the world, but in no way would I say he sucks. He falls between the "suck" end of the spectrum and the "OMG" end of it.

No, with his offensive numbers (particularly that wonderful career .305 OBP) at a corner infield position, you can pretty much say he SUCKS.

And I'm not sure how the Cubs history of bad 3B fits into the argument, other than the fact that he'd fit right in with that horrid bunch.

And this thread has no caught the eye of WSI, who continue to use no statistical evidence to say that Crede is better than Babe Ruth.
