Yeah, Dave Roberts looks like Juan Pierre without as many SB's. I'll pass.

Dave Roberts is also old enough to be Juan Pierre's father.

the kaz matsui sweepstakes...where the winner is the loser.

We might not like his game, but it's not fair to call Kaz a loser. Because he's clearly the winner here.

The Cubs still lose, because now they probably move on to plan B from Kaz, which could only be worse.

I dread Plan B. I'm so frustrated with Hendry, that I'd just as soon they don't make any moves this offseason, because I probably won't like anything he does. Call it an offseason now before any more damage gets done.

I hesitate to bring this up, but one of my sources did say there was "some talk (nothing substantive)" of the Giants interested in pursuing a Dave Roberts for Jason Marquis deal in conjunction with a Miguel Cabrera for Lincecum/Cain plus prospects deal.

wouldn't bother me at all.

Roberts has no trade protection. If he wants anything to waive that (like an extention) no way. It'd be nice to clear money in 2009. Would it be some sort of rotation with Murton, Pie, and Roberts? I could live with it if we get Tejada.

There has been talk that Juan Pierre is available...

Barring some unforeseen developments, the Astros will beat out the Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies to sign free-agent second baseman Kazuo Matsui, a person with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed on Thursday night.

Does the bolded statement above from Houston and the Cubs GM's love of long term deals scare anyone else?

What, Ned? Fine, Kemp and Pierre for Marquis? You have yourself a deal.

He makes less than Marquis, which means a trade benefits the Cubs financially. And he's brittle enough that there's no way he completely overshadows Pie's potential playing time.

He'll play at 36 and 37 the next two years, and be a 4th OF who gets on 34% of the time. The big problem is he can't hit lefties, but he can hold his own against some righties playing for Murton.

Personally, I don't like it. The Marquis offset is really the only positive, and it's slight.

If the Cubs are going to bring in Dave Roberts, they might as well go ahead and trade Pie in some sort of big deal.

Wait until Punch Drunk throws in some cash "to be fair".

Leaving them with maybe 300 mediocre PA out of Roberts next year, and nobody else for CF? I'd rather let Pie get his 500 PA, Murton 600 in RF, and Roberts 300 subbing for both. He can't stay healthy anymore and that's only going to get worse and worse as he ages.

I heard there were 2 teams that approached the Cubs on Marquis. Assuming the Giants were one, perhaps the Nationals or Rangers were the other.

You'd think it would be a team that plays in a pitcher's park.

Nationals would fit. Rangers not so much.

Tigers, Mariners, Padres, Mets.

I doesn't matter to me. The fact that there is a market for him outside of the Cubs is good enough news for me! :P

Not sure if Hendry initiated it, but Dave Roberts might be plan B territory. Several sources have said Roberts is being shopped to teams, who need CFs, but don't want to pay Rowand or Andruw. I don't suppose Hendry is bright enough to go for Randy Winn instead of Dave Roberts.

I don't know how bad Roberts' contract is but if it means we get rid of Marquis, I'm all for it.

1 more year, 7.5M.

Marquis has 08:$6.375M, 09:$9.875M

Not true. Roberts has two years remaining at $6.5 per.

I would rather have Marquis at that price.

Plan B I fear you most of all.

I really think Matsui would have worked out ok and I like that he takes a fair amount of pitches. If Hendry wakes up from his slumber and gets an impact bat in right I'll be satisfied with what the Cubs have.

The only impact bat that I see that meets the Cubs requirements outside of Fukudome is Milton Bradley.

Geoff Jenkins is probably next in line, but I think I'd rather see them grab Jose Guillen over Jenkins, but they won't do that.

Free agent wise you're right. I think Hendry might pull an interesting trade for a left bat if Fukedome doesn't sign. I would have loved Bradley if he didn't have the knee problem until July or so. Jenkins/Burnitz they seem the same to me and I agree Gullen would be better.....did he have steroid problems?

Or maybe they can get Jones from Detroit for Hill and Veal!

Let's see do i take $1mill more to play for a team that was 16 games under .500 or do i take $1mill less and play for a team that has the better chance of winning?
Posted
If losing Matsui costs us Fukudome, well, I'm willing to accept that based simply on the fact that Matsui is complete garbage, and his signing would have just represented all that is wrong with this organization.

Be careful for what you wish for, they may have been the lesser of 2 evils.

Possibly realistic trade targets:

Hamilton

Dunn

Griffey

Ibanez

Church

Scott

Drew

Garrett Anderson

Ethier

McLouth

Kubel

FAs:

Green

Lofton

Jenkins

Bradley
