I'm just waiting for someone to be a jerk and post a link to a Fukudome decision... which will of course be Rick Roll.

I would hope that no one would fall for that after last night's overdose.

Well, there are plenty of posters who did not witness/ experience that.

And they should be counting their blessings.

This from cbssports: Another high interest Japanese free agent, outfielder Kosuke Fukodome, is expected to narrow his choices early next week after his agent presents him with a final report regarding his options on Friday. San Diego is believed to have offered three years and $36 million, and the Cubs may be up to as much as four years and $40 million. The Padres are hoping Fukodome prefers a western locale, because the Cubs almost certainly will out-bid them.

I'm no math whiz, but 4 /40 is less than 3/36. It's especially less, if you consider that the guy would go to the west coast for less money.

Yeah, I'm guess they either have it backwards or just don't know what they're talking about.

um...4 > 3 and 40 > 36. It's guaranteed money, so it's more. The per year is less, but the contract amount is bigger. Not saying it's a better deal for the player, but it's certainly more.

If that's really Fukudome's choice, I'd take the Padres offer. Unless he flops, he's going to make more than $4m in that 4th year after his Padres contract expires.

Fukodome seems to not want to prefer the West Coast however the team that is most interested, Padres, does not have enough money. So I suggest we make a deal with that team and get Khalil Greene and Brian Giles. I think we may be able to do it for Murton, Marshall, and Theriot, however, more players may have to be included. The reason I think it may work with those three is because by taking on Giles contract we will give them enough money to sign Fukodome. Plus the dropoff from Giles to Murton is not that drastic. That would give the Padres an OF of Murton, Fukodome, and Bradley and they would get another solid starter in Marshall.

For those of you concerned Giles hit about 300 with an OBP of about 370 and an OPS of 870 away from Petco. I believe this deal would help both teams substantially.

I think the more important point is that cbssportsline didn't say which offer was better. The cubs sound like front-runners in their snippet "because the Cubs almost certainly will out-bid them." We may not be in the lead, but the Padres best offer is on the table whereas the Cubs can go higher. that's my impression at least

Bruce Miles is talking about some rather insane numbers, and I'm not sure it's that much beyond what we'll see.

The pursuit of Fukudome will be costly in terms of dollars, especially in light of the free-agent contracts given to Andruw Jones by the Dodgers and Torii Hunter by the Angels. It could end up costing the winning bidder up to $75 million over five years for Fukudome.

$15m per year for a guy who might wind up being nearly as good as Hideki Matsui someday, making considering more than Hideki makes right now. That would be some commitment.

Giles wants to play for his hometown Padres. I'd be shocked if he didn't have some type of no-trade clause in his contract.

Whatever power potential Fukudome had in MLB will be obsolete playing for the Padres. If he plays there his production probably wouldn't be worth his end contract, IMO. That park will eat him up

I'm out. Let's find a cheaper option that can put up a respectable OBP for a fraction of the cost. This is what happens when Hendry is so public about his interest.

This is also what happens when Hendry puts all of his eggs in one basket, which he's basically done on two different fronts this offseason.

1) Fukudome

2) Lefty speedster that can hit for power

Where is this 12m number coming from for the Padres? I'm not buying it.

The last number I heard was 8m. And that's about where I would expect them to bow out.

Alderson was quoted as saying it was one of the 3 biggest offers they've ever given (turns out one of the 4 biggest because he didn't know Nevin had gotten a big offer from the Padres). That puts it at over $10M/year.
