and...once again Hendry tips his hand and announces to the world his intentions. nice work Jim, great bargaining leverage

Yeah, Hendry is well known for that.

hello? soriano?

As far as I remember, Hendry never came out and said that he wanted Soriano in public before he signed him. Maybe I'm wrong, but I certainly don't remember it.

I dont care how you pronounce it, i'm always going to say "explitive-you-dome"

Well okay, maybe not, i'm not that immature. But I hope there are chants like that at the ballpark.

Either sarcasm or unintentional hilarity.

How do you like St. Joes? Do they have computer science there?

Holy offtopic. But yes, I enjoy it here although I think they charge way too much tuition (this goes beyond regular tuition complaints). Yes they do have a computer science major here.

Also, upon further review that comment must be sarcasm because it actually makes no sense whatsoever. Is Hendry supposed to not let Fukudome or anyone know he wants to sign him until he actually signs him? Is he supposed to jump out of a closet yelling QUICK SIGN THIS in Japanese?

My son is looking at colleges and I thought I'd ask while you were on line.

I think Hendry has better people around him now then he did before and other than that Traschel trade he seems to be doing better....ok that and the Marquis signing.

Well St. Joe's is a good school if you're looking for a moderately small one, it runs around 35k a year though. Philly setting is actually pretty nice and while the city is certainly going through its crime issues the security keeps the campus pretty safe. I would imagine the Comp Sci program is fairly decent although I can't say for sure. And hey, if he ever needs a part time job in the IT dept here...

Al on BCB seems to think this is very likely to happen, according to his 'sources'

I've received some information over the weekend that I'm going to tell you about -- and it may not happen, but I trust the source and if it does, well, you can tell everyone where you heard it first.

The Cubs are seriously pursuing both Kosuke Fukudome and Hiroki Kuroda and may, if they make good offers to both of them, have them signed within the next week or so, making their first big splash into the Japanese market.

Am I the only one not terribly excited about this guy?

Maybe I just don't know enough about him?

No, neither am I.

I think people like his name more than anything else.

He's coming of an injury too.

How are we supposed to be able to afford posting fees + contracts for both guys?

I'm calling shenanigans.

According to Bruce there aren't any posting fees b/c they are free agents.

Well, then. That explains that.

Yes please. I'd love to make a splash right away.

Does Kuroda really project as a starter, though?

What I've read is that he projects into a 3-4 starter...but I am not sure.

Looking at his numbers, I just don't see why one could expect Kuroda to have significantly more success than Igawa did this past season.

This also seems like it would make sense given the pending sale, in that getting a piece of the Japanese market could only help the value of the club.

Interesting point that really hasn't been addressed. It can only help in that regard.

Poor comparison on a couple of levels. Igawa walked fifty-sixty guys a season in Japan. Kuroda hasn't walked fifty in a season since 2000. Igawa played in one of the best pitchers parks in the Central League. Kuroda, on the other hand, pitched in the biggest offensive park in Japan. Igawa's fastball sits in the high 80s, a decent fastball in Japan, passable at best in the US for a southpaw. Kuroda sits around 90-91, and he's much more of an "american" pitcher than Igawa. Igawa is also a bounce-back guy. There's a very real possibility hes a decent pitcher the next few years if he's given the opportunity. Igawa was always up and down from season to season in Japan. He was a flyball pitcher with walks in a pitchers park.

Kuroda's fairly nuetral. He's certainly capable of going 200 innings with in ERA in the 4.40 range. Not great, but if he's your number four or five, you're ecstatic. There is also something to be said that the guys who have other Japanese players on their team have transitioned better. The really have only been two busts, Matsui and Igawa. Ishii, Ichiro, Jojima, Iguchi, and others have been as good as advertised.

Posted
Matsui busted primarily because of a string of injuries he suffered with the Mets.
