In terms of perceived value, Tabata and Andrus are "bundles."

Compare Asdrubal Cabrera's career to Tabata's up to Advanced A.

Andrus's career OPS is .697, he's very young but it seems like you should do more than just be young and do okay to be considering a smoking hot prospect.

Ok, so you are saying that those of the young, toolsy, unproven class have a lot of perceived value, but you aren't a big fan. I'd have to agree, so many of those guys flame out as they face higher competition. Some make it through and are great, but its a lot more likely the guy will never reach the majors. High risk/high reward.

I think one thing working for the Braves is that they have a lot of confidence in their player development to mold young players and help them adapt to higher levels of pitching.

Here is what the article says about him...

The mid-revenue Padres strongly expect the Marlins to shop and trade third baseman Miguel Cabrera within five weeks.

It says that the Padres EXPECT him to be available, not that he is available. Also, what little stock I put into it completely disappeared when it went on to say this...

The Padres won't be surprised if Rodriguez, a Miami native, signs with the Marlins in return for an ownership stake linked to keeping the franchise in South Florida.

Yeah, ARod is going to sign with the Marlins. Wasn't their entire payroll two years ago about half of what he's asking for? They paid 25 players a total of 14M... they're not going to pay one player 30M two years later.

If and when Miguel Cabrera is officially on the market, you'll hear/read about it somewhere other than some San Diego newspaper first.

Actually, there've been rumblings about this for a week now and the Union-Trib isnt' the first place I've read about it. I've read that the Yankees will go aggressively after him to replace ARod.

Oh, yeah there has been talk about him being moved since well before this week. I was just saying that the article doesn't mean it's definitive, as the thread title suggests.

Gammons says it's definitive: link.

If i'm the Marlins I don't even talk to them without having Hughes and Joba on the table.

I don't hold any hope that the Cubs could get Cabrera, but if Miggy is available, I'd hope the Cubs make every attempt to get him.

Cabrera in the middle of the line-up surrounded by Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano would be phenomenal.

Aren't you forgetting that Cabrera played for the 2003 Marlins? That alone should spark Hendry's interest even if he is good.

We can't trade for him without an extension though, at least IMO.

I disagree with the notion that the Cubs can't compete for Cabrera.

Sure, if every team offered up their best prospects, the Cubs aren't likely to draw the interest. But not every team is going to offer their best prospects. And it's not like "best prospects" is a universally accepted list of the same guys. The Cubs can, and should, compete with any team out there, if, for no other reason than they can literally offer anybody. There are no untouchables. Others might have better prospects, but they aren't about to trade them.

I wouldn't let the lack of an extension derail a trade. They will have the ability to extend him for a long time after any deal goes down.

Maybe it's me but it seems the Fish like the Cub farm pitchers.

What is implied in Gammons' blog and other reports I've read is that Cabrera is a 3B/1B kind of guy. That is why teams like the Yankees/Red Sox/Angels/Dodgers are most talked about (plus they have great high ceiling prospects). They all need a 3B, and some could use a better 1B. From everything I've read about his weight issues and lack of speed, it seems he is not capable of playing OF anymore.

Obviously we don't have the prospects that some of the elite farms can offer. What we DO have however, are young, cheap players who have already shown promise at the big-league level.

Marmol had a comparable year to F-Rod, Murton has always hit when given regular PT and Hill was one of the best LHP in the NL in his first full season as a starter.

These guys should have a good bit of value.

The Marlins have already gotten half of their staff via Chicago, why not grab Hill and Marmol as well? Hill in particular could put up some great #'s down there where his HR/9 figures to drop dramatically. Florida could spin off Dontrelle to someone else and still have a young, talented team while vastly lowering payroll.

I would start by offering Hill, Murton, Gallagher and EPatt and when Florida says they need Marmol I replace Gallagher with Marmol and there we go.

I really think that is a solid offer.

The question is, does this handicap our pitching staff too much?

Regardless of his weight issues, I doubt he'd be any worse in RF than Cliff Floyd was.

Not to mention any number of other OFers who have played for winning teams. And it's no guarantee that he's just going to get bigger and slower. He's playing in freaking Miami, with absolutely nobody paying attention, and little to no leadership on the team. He's the veteran with that squad. And he's had about 4 different managers already. Put him on a team like the Cubs, with Lou in charge, guys like Lee, Soriano and Ramirez, guys who are not only respected veterans, but some Latino stars as well as a guy who once play with Miggy, and I have very little doubt the Cubs could get the most out of him.

And please let us not forget that Barry Rozner will force Miguel Cabrera to run to first base, which in turn will help him keep his weight down :D .

Hendry should inquire about Miggy. We'll have to gut the farm but I think we're doomed in 2009 anyway so I say make a big push in 2008 and hope some new youngsters emerge in 2010. We're committed to win-now strategy so we might as well go for it. We'll worry about Miggy's weight later.

Maybe he fattened himself up so no one would accuse him of being on roids. Remember how small he looked when he first came in?

I'd bet that Cabrera could stay in good enough shape to play OF until Lee's contract runs out. If not I'd trade Lee to make room for Cabrera at 1st if it came down to that.

Carlos had similar issues, and now has it under control. He could take miggy under his wings.
