Cowherd also said "it's not surprise that teams get better when A-Rod leaves". Amazing

It's not a surprise that ESPN radio gets better ratings when Cowherd's show is over either.

That surprises me about you. Not just about Neyer, who was great about 5-7 years ago but less so now, but b/c Kurkjian's odd/useless stat schtick got old a long long time ago.

Anyone in favor of going the deferred compensation route (e.g., Griffey & the Reds)?

Consider this contract:

8 years/$261 mil.

15, 15, 15, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 22, 22, 22

$66 mil. deferred to years 9-11

-Present value of the deal is slightly greater than A Rod's remaining deal, plus the 5 year/$150 mil. the Yankees were reported to offer.

-Boras gets to sell it as the richest deal in ML history (8-year $261 mil.).

-A Rod gets to play SS again and for Lou.

-Cubs get some near-term payroll relief (at least until D Lee's off the books).

Assuming the payroll budget grows by 5% per year, A. Rod's portion of the budget would be as follows: 13%, 13%, 12%, 23%, 22%, 21%, 20%, 19%, (and the three years he's no longer playing: 13%, 13%, 12%).

If the Cubs were confident they could developing pitching and a replacement for Lee, I'd have to think hard about it.

its not a joke. he has. its sad, he used to be a decent read. now he's unreadable.

it took everything he had not to call Boras and A-Rod douchebags on the air this morning. he was livid. unbelievable amount of homerism from the guy who is supposed to be the main baseball guy at a national sports outlet

Yes, he was convulsing last night in post game coverage he was so angry at A-Rod. He was like "there's a reason A-Rod has never played in World Series!!"

That's a nice idea but I wonder if Hendry has his hands tied on being able to work a contract like that.

The giants are not too far removed from the Texas situation that ARod was in and so desperately wanted to get out of. As others have said, regardless of their pitching, they have NO offense other than Bonds. So in scenarios where ARod is replacing Bonds, they will be just about back to where they started. The fact that Sabean refuses to spend money on the draft (well on whatever crummy draft picks he doesn't give up) means that this is not going to be a team with a bright future. They will have to basically turn over their entire roster of position players in the very near future and don't have much of anything from the farm to replace them cheaply. SO, they will have to spend money on the FA market to fill those holes. Plus, those old farts weren't making a ton of money (most in the 5M range) so the roster turn over isn't going to free up a ton of money. Spending the money on ARod will prohibit their ability to field an offense anywhere near to league average.

I hope this wasn't already posted, but . . . what a strange premise Rosenthal has here. Anyone really think an a-rod deal (with, uh, who knows?) is actually close, rather than being the typical Boras long-drawn out affair?

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7386758?MSNHPHCP&GT1=10539

The deal is done. Or darn near close to it.

I don't know the team. I don't know the terms. But I know this much: There is no way Alex Rodriguez would have opted out of his contract with the Yankees unless he and his agent, Scott Boras, knew they had a bigger score coming.

and....Colin Cowherd and Peter Gammons were just on ESPN Radio saying how A-Rod is not a winner like Dustin Pedroia. shoot me now

Peter is mad at A-Rod for announcing during the WS (you should have heard him ranting on that topic yesterday - he probably wouldn't have cared if it was the Indians in the WS).

Yep, now we get to really find out the true extent of ESPN being the Boston network. I'll bet anyone who comes out with any MLB news at all in the next week will be hated on for trying to take away from the Red Sox's glory.

Oh there's no doubt about that.

I will make a bold prediction here:

This will be the longest thread of the offseason.

but will it be anywhere near as entertaining as the Soriano signing thread?

Only if he actually signs with the Cubs.

At least this time I don't think I'll be arguing against everyone!!! YAY.

I could find a way to justify his 300 million dollar price tag if he said he was going to fund the school system of several towns or building and funding a youth education fascility like Jordan, even if he was just buying himself a congressman I can see it. This is just about getting more very high priced hookers.

Hookers don't bring in playoff revenue. Or at least none that I know of.

$500 internet dollars he goes to the Angels.

I'll put a billion Stanly nickels on him going to the Red Sox.

I have 1000 Shrute bucks that say otherwise.

...whats the ratio of Shrute bucks to Stanly nickels?

Nobody answered this one? How sad... it's my favorite quote from the Office

"The same as the ratio of unicorns to leprechauns."

it really irritates me when players are ridiculed for exercising a rightful, contract-guaranteed clause -- a clause only available because management allowed its inclusion.

arod's timing, however, was a little off-putting, imho.

Apparently the apple didn't fall far from the tree. I heard on ESPN Radio this morning that Hank Steinbrenner commented on how Alex Rodriguez didn't appreciate the "privilege" of playing for the Yankees.

I don't understand why the Giants would garner any attention at all in the A-Rod sweepstakes. That team needs to rebuild more than any team in baseball. Outside of Zito, Cain and Lincecum, they have very little to build around. They are fresh off a last place finish that most certainly was not a fluke. They are a very bad and old team right now.

You could have said the same about the Cubs last year. Some organizations are just very reluctant to have a rebuilding year. I can't say I've ever seen the Cubs have one.

The Cubs at least had talented players who are not all in the back half of their 30's.

Omar Vizquel will be 41 and is coming off his worst season ever at the plate. Rich Aurilia will be 36 and Ryan Klesko will be 37 in April. Ray Durham is 36. Dave Roberts will be 36.

Excluding Barry Bonds since he won't be a Giant in 2008, Randy Winn is the only player who had an OPS+ above 100 last year (105).

I totally agree that they should blow it up and not even try to contend in 2008. I'm just saying that some teams make an attempt to contend every year, even when they'd be better off not trying. The Cubs have historically been really bad about that. I don't know about the Giants.

The Red Sox will free $52.6 million off the books for next year by letting their free agents (Schilling, Clement, Lowell, Gagne, Hinske, Tavarez, Timlin, Kielty, and Clayton) walk. They probably will trade Coco Crisp saving another $4.75 million ($5.75 in 2009). Also, Varitek @ $9 million and Ramirez @ $20 million come off the books after next year. If they spend $20 million replacing the eight free agents plus $30 million for ARod (replacing Lowell) they would be where they are now. Looking for the right combination of payroll and chance to win the WS, the Red Sox and the Angels have to be the top two teams.

i think the white sox are the dark horse team that could land arod.

Isn't Kenny Williams the guy who completely refuses to negotiate with Boras?

Yep.

Williams has his assistants negotiate with Boras' clients, its not a big deal.

They're Cubbish. Not exactly the same, but Cubbish.
