Clearly, Raisin, you (and others) have some misconceptions about exactly which team is the best in the country this year. My Tar Heels will undoubtedly destroy all of their competition.

Until they just decide simply to stop all scoring of any kind, as they did in the last several minutes of regulation and the entirety of OT against Georgetown last year in the Final Four.

So, we may not win anything important, but we will spend at least SOME time atop the coaches' poll! Even though UCLA got more first place votes! So there!

IU looked like an offensive juggernaut today. Scored 121, shot 60% from the field. The Fab 4 Freshmen scored 71 of those points and shot an amazing 25-38 from the field. The JUCO transfers combined for 9 steals! And DJ was amazing. 13 points, 11 rebs, 6 assists (0 TOs), 3 blocks. IU could be 10-deep this season.

mind telling us what crap school they played?

North Alabama.

(I only know this because of the incessant BTN ads they showed in the press box yesterday during Ball State v. IU.)

Ball State handled DIII Anderson in an exhibition today. Butler, on Friday, should pose something of a bigger test.

So a DII school, thats kind of what I figured. Color me unimpressed that IU was only up 14 midway thru the 2nd half.

Obviously, it's hard to get a good read when playing a D-II school, but this is a week where MSU lost to one such team. Also, since it's obviously a preseason game, they inherently were playing a D-II school. Of course they were playing a "crap school."

Defensively they were unimpressive (outside of blocked shots, which are often the byproduct of initial porous defense coupled with superior athleticism). Offensively, they were quite impressive. But it remains to be seen how they'll look against real competition.

That was basically my point. Raws post was talking of IU being an offensive juggernaut and stuff, but come on how can you take anything away from a game that you were playing a DII school. I just found it funny that Raw left that part out of his post, and didnt mention their uninspired defensive effort. These preseason games tell you nothing, just like that Michigan State loss tells us nothing,

Agreed. I'm not putting a whole lot of stock in Michigan State's loss. They still have Izzo and a lot of talent. Same for IU, they beat a scrub D-II school by 45. So? I'm not sure what that means. I'm disappointed by their defensive effort. They'll be able to outscore a lot of teams, but to be as good as they can be and beat good teams, they're going to have to play much harder and better there.

However, I was there and this is easily the most talented and athletic team IU has had in a great number of years (1992-93 to be precise; 2000-01's talent level was close, but not athleticism). Of course, that also speaks to the doldrums IU has been in over the past decade and a half. I'm not sure what that will amount to, but IU does have a chance to be pretty damned good.

I dont think you will find anyone arguing that IU has a chance to be damn good, I just took issue with Raws post. Also better enjoy it now, cause sanctions are on their way, I just wonder how strong they will be.

I didn't mean to imply you or anyone said IU won't be good; and Raw's post likely was overly optimistic fanaticism.

As for sanctions, we'll see. They self-reported and self-sanctioned after phone calls. In fact, none of Sampson's calls even violated NCAA rules, only his personal sanctions. I can tell you IU is not happy with Sampson (though why they didn't see this coming I have no idea; shame on them). I doubt the sanctions will have too detrimental affect, honestly.

Posted
I'd be shocked if the NCAA doesn't amp up the sanctions on Sampson. You can't let a coach violate the terms of his previous punishment and let him off with anything but fiercer punishment.

For the record, I didn't say IU was a juggernaut. I said they looked like one. I didn't go into the defense, because my post was about the offense, and I didn't think anyone wanted to read an analysis of a game vs. a DII team. The IU board I post on, I went more in depth.

The response to my post was basically you being confrontational because of your obvious IU bias. And who says you can't take anything from these games? IU beat a team they were supposed to beat by 45, by 45. They got 30 points from a guy that was thought to be the 3rd or 4th player off the bench. They got 12 points and great movement away from the ball from a guy who I assumed would be a sure redshirt. They got an impressive performance from a raw freshman who I didn't think would have much of a clue this year.

If you want me to completely indepthly give my thoughts on every possession, I'll gladly do that so I meet your requirements. I apologize for not mentioning everything in a 3-line post and being optimistic about a team scoring 123 points in their first game as a team.

You are acting like its impressive that a guy you thought would redshirt had a good game against a DII school. Big deal, hes at IU, a DI Big Ten school, he should be able to look impressive against a DII school. A raw freshman had a good game against a DII school. He is at IU for a reason, and the kids at North Alabama are playing for a DII school for a reason, the freshman should be able to look good against a team, who he is more than likely, head and shoulders above talent wise.

They looked like an offensive juggernaut against a DII school? Big deal, this is IU we are talking about who is ranked in the top 10 of DI. Look I already said IU will be good, but using this game as a judge for anything, is absurd. Obviously every player on IU should be able to look impressive against this school.
