From what I'm hearing, Sampson's job is in serious jeopardy. Immediately. I'm starting to doubt he coaches this weekend, though it may be via suspension not dismissal due to legal ramifications.

As I'm sure somebody else has already said, this makes the most financial sense for IU considering the clause in Sampson's contract about violations. If they do it now they'll get hit with the wrongful termination suit, but if they just suspend him now and wait until the June hearing/conviction to axe him they're fine.

I've read that the state of Indiana doesn't have the same laws as Ohio. Thus you can fire Sampson for any reason without being subjected to the same penalties that OSU was with O'Brien.

I'm sure they could fire him for any reason. It's just that, without the clause kicking in, they'd still have to pay his salary. If they want to fire him and stop paying him they'd have to let due process run its course. At this time the violations are only alleged, so the clause wouldn't kick in yet.

Wow, ASU pulls off the upset of Stanford in OT despite being down 8 with 3 minutes to go and having Jeff Pendergraph foul out in regulation. UCLA back in the drivers seat in the conference.

Prediction:

Indiana hires Bruce Weber and takes BAM's long awaited good recruiting class with him. Illiniguy sets himself on fire.

hahaha

I liked it.

But, I have a more accurate prediction,

Kansas bounced in first weekend of the tournament. Snood and Kansas fans everywhere wonder if they made the right hire. They publicly reassure themselves they still are super elite. Wondering privately how many McDAAs it takes for Bill Self to get to a final four.

A name for Indiana fans to chew on as a possible replacement: Tony Bennett. He has Midwestern ties and wants to go back and most of the guys he has rebuilt the program around are seniors this year (Low, Weaver, Cowgill). Now would be a perfect time for him to move up.

As a Pac-10 guy, I'd love to see him stay. A good WSU program means a lot to the Pac.

His sister, Kathi, was the head women's basketball coach at IU previously. Not sure how that might factor in. Sean Miller and Brad Brownell would also hopefully be on the list.

or that doesn't happen, and KU has a nice healthy tourney run. Illiniguy sets himself on fire.

You'd think a run to the Elite 8 would be enough to stop the KU first round talk.

Self needs a FF to shut people up. It's that simple. (But then it will be NC choker talk.) It may not be fair, but that's the way it is, and he isn't the first coach to go through it. Dean, Lute, Donavan, and Roy were all labeled as chokers. It's just the way it works.

Never been a fan of deriving too much from a one-and-done playoff loss (although those KU losses in the first round were bad...just as bad as those UCLA first round losses in 1994 and 1996).

Those guys, however, had the ability to coach their way out of a wet paper bag. Self, not so much. One of the worst in game coaches I've ever seen. And I'm an Illini fan who thought that when he was here. I harbor no ill will toward Kansas for taking him because, while in the short run Illinois may struggle, the players that do come here will get the most out of their talent as opposed to floundering in the hi-low under Self. And Illinois will be good again and in the tourney next year anyway.

if he's bad, how come his teams are near the top in defensive and offensive efficiency? People who badmouth his coaching never have any concrete criticism other than his team lost XXX game. It's silly. I mean, you're sitting there talking about the hi-lo, and we don't even run the hi-lo as a primary offense. But Illini fans talk like that's all he does.

Self is not a top-5 coach. I'll admit that. But he is one of the premier coaches in college hoops. You don't win as much as he does if you're not. And don't throw the talent thing out there, because he coached ORU out of the depths, and he won with mid-major talent at Tulsa, too.

I've only seen one poorly coached team by Self, and that was the Bucknell/KU team.

OMG, so that's where our band got that insanely stupid "Boing! Boing! WOOO!" thing. That is the single dumbest thing I've ever seen/heard at a basketball game.

4 wins against top 25 RPI teams; I think we're going to make the tournament. I hope Sendek doesn't get a good offer because he is building a good program around the jewel, Harden. I had tickets for tonight, but I have the flu. Oh well.

Also, if we can get consistent outside shooting from Kuksiks, we could be dangerous.

I don't think Greenspan should be conducting this investigation. He is the guy who brought in Kelvin, and he must know a lot of people want him out with Sampson. I would prefer someone from the University side or a 3rd party did the investigation. The quicker IU cuts the cord, the better the chance that the NCAA is easier on them.

The investigation is just a formality anyway. You know, "due process". They've already decided to can Kelvin, imo.

Win 4 more(including tourney games) and you're good for me.

The big reason Self looks good is because his teams are more talented than about 90 percent of the teams they play. That's why his numbers will always be really pretty. However, when he plays one of those other teams, usually around the elite eight, he is going to be exposed. He is terrible at in game adjustments. I am still waiting for us to adjust and take away the three against Notre Dame.

That was an archetypal poorly coached game. Also, Dee Brown was completely out of control. I thought Illinois was a lock for the Sweet 16 that year; I had actually predicted Bruce Pearl's UW-Milwaukee team to upset Notre Dame (would've been right save a missed layup).

Yeah, you guys should make the tourney.

The key has been Pendergraph coming on so strong (29 against Arizona? holy crap). Harden's a good one, he took over the final 30 seconds and the OT. He should be getting as much love as Bayless, Love and Mayo but he's not. I would be worried if Harden leaves though I think he'd be wise to stay one more year.

He has said he is staying another year since he'll still be only 19 in the '09 draft. Pendergraff has been great, but he really needs Harden to be healthy. When Harden was playing through the groin injury the past three weeks, he wasn't as mobile and wasn't drawing as many double teams which hurt Pendergraff a lot.

If Mizzou can beat K-State today, then...

ahahaha absolutely zero chance that happens. Mizzou=losers.

And I thought I'd let people know that I've heard whispers from people about possible point shaving scandal. If true, it'd just be another embarrassing story for the pathetic mizzou basketball program. Thank God Gary Pinkel has resurrected the football program.
