Yanks management are turdnuggets. They basically humiliated him into quitting.

Total slap in the face.

Hopefully Arod, Posada, and Rivera give management the finger on the way to free agency.

We already got a catcher!

We do? What's his name??

Koyie Hill?

Torre to The Boss:
Take this job and shove it

I ain't working here no more

My woman done left and took all the reasons

I was working for

You better not try to stand in my way

As im a walking out the door.

Take this job and shove it

I ain't working here no more

Ive been workin in this factory

From now on fifteen years

All this time I watched my woman

Drowning in a pool of tears

And Ive seen a lot of good folk die

Who had a lot of bills to pay

I'd give the shirt right off of my back

If I had the nerve to say

(Chorus)

Well that foreman, hes a regular dog

The line boss, hes a fool

Got a brand new flat-top haircut

Lord, he thinks hes cool

One of these days, Im gonna blow my top

And that sucker, hes gonna pay

Lord I cant wait to see their faces

When I get up the nerve to say

(Chorus)

(Instrumental)

Take this job and shove it

OMC is right there with my opinion. They should have not made it public and let Torre announce whatever he wanted. Low-balling a one year deal is classless. After 12 years, Torre should get the ending of his choice.....

Excuse me while I go tell my dad(yankees fan) and watch him piss his pants with joy.

your dad hates Joe Torre?

I thought the implication was rather clear

I think he was trying to figure out why

I know MurtonFan is the board whipping boy, but from what I can tell, Torre isn't universally loved by Yankees fans. I only regularly talk to a handful of Yankees fans and rarely about baseball b/c they're loathsome, but the last year or two, the Torre name hasn't always been spoken in praise. So I'm not exactly shocked that MurtonFan's dad is happy to see him gone.

A one year deal with a 3 million pay cut? Wow that was a slap in the face, they should have just said don't come back.
They probably wanted him gone but to save face wanted it to come out as his decision. That really isn't all that uncommon.

Ditto. But, not George's style.

Cowards.

David Allan Coe did a great version too. Paycheck's was the best and the original, though.

What I don't get is how some of the ESPN idiots and some Yankees fans that I've heard can blame Joe Torre for turning it down, and aren't instead mad at the Yanks front office.

Can you imagine the backlash Hendry would catch if, when negotiating Z's contract, he instead offered Z a one year offer with a base salary of only 2/3rds his then current contract but included a bunch of incentives based on conditions not fully in his control to take him to barely more than he was making last year? It's absurd. Such an "offer" shouldn't be dignified as an actual good faith attempt at an offer.

man, torre is such a class act...

if he manages again...whoever gets him will be lucky

oh, i am watching the press conference right now...just a great guy

ESPN just said the Yanks have reached out to 3 people so far. Mattingly, Girardi, and Tony Pena.

All in house, sorta. I'm not surprised by those three. Pena has previously been a mangaer, and the Yanks have been eyeing Donnie Baseball and Girardi as possible replacements for Torre for some time.

He was a top country star in the 1970s (as was David Allen Coe, who another poster mentioned also recorded that song).

While Torre is certainly a classy individual and the Yankee ownership are a bunch of pompous asses, I still believe as a manager, Torre is vastly over-rated. The organization put together one of the best rosters in baseball yearly and spent like no one else.

Making the playoffs twelve years in a row is great for most organizations. But winning the WS is the only thing that matters in the Yankee's organization. And Torre was 0-7 in his past 7 tries with some pretty good talent.

Just my opinion.

ESPN has just announced it's changing its call letters to YES2.

I hope they hire Girardi. It will be high comedy. The first time he sac bunts in the second inning the city of NY will explode.

You're assuming that NY wouldn't appreciate sac bunting in the second inning. While it isn't right to do, IMO most fans will like it.

While Im not arguing Torre is a great manager, its not his fault that the pitchers he has been given have been over the hill. They have put together a great offensive team, but Cashman has consisitently went out and got over the hill starting pitchers, or overrated injury risk starting pitchers(Pavano, Wright). That team the way it is comprised, the manager doesnt have to do much at all, except manage the bullpen. So while I dont think Torre is a great manager, I dont think the failures of the Yankees in the playoffs can be placed solely on him. When you talk bout being overrated, you need to look at brian Cashman before looking anywhere else.

Yea when I heard that on ESPN and told my dad he started gushing over Girardi and how he is a "disciplinarian."

I like Cashman, but from seeing Torre manage, I do not like Torre. I actually had to convince my dad that Torre was not a great manager like he thought.

I agree with you to a certain extent. Torre is not the only one to blame for not winning a Championship the past 7 years. But many look at Torre's early years as a Yankee manager and give him much of the credit for 4 WS titles in 5 years. If he gets the credit for the championships, he's got to take his share of the blame for the lack of championships.

I think LOTS of managers could have accomplished what Torre did in his 12 years if they were given his roster. I'll bet a guy like Bobby Cox would've even faired better than Torre. IMO, Cox made more with less talent. He unfortunately had his best teams when the Yankees were loaded like no one else.

I don't think Torre is a bad manager. I just don't think he's one of the best ever. His record in St. Louis and Atlanta (though he was much younger/inexperienced as a manager) lend to that thought. IMO, he's the "Phil Jackson" of baseball.

I'd be interested to see what he's able to do with a much less talented roster and a franchise willing to spend much less to replace a team's unproductive/aging/hurt peices.
