I wonder how long it will take for Harang to get mark prior'd.

Except Mark Prior has some of the worst upper body mechanics ever for a pitcher. I know a lot of people are jumping to conclusions that just because Dusty is their manager now that he will destroy ever single pitcher they have. I don't think that will be the case. I think a pitcher is more likely to break down if they have bad mechanics than the big pitch count theory. I really don't see anything mechanically in Harang, Arroyo, or Bailey that catches my eye. They are no Dan Haren when it comes to mechanics, but their mechanics are pretty good.

It's part of the problem combined with their work loads, they were bound to pitch too many pitches while fatigued.

Speaking of mechanics, you decide on one arm slot yet? My friend said your arm slot was all over the place at CoD last month.

pretty hilarious take at tcr.

That is hilarious. My favorite part...

10-1-08 - The Reds play the Cubs at Wrigley in a one-game playoff to determine the sole NL Central representative in the playoffs. After 9 innings, the score is tied at 2, the Reds’ infield is 0-14 with 2 sacrifice bunts. Dunn, playing in game 163, hits his 100th and 101st home runs of the regular season, but strikes out four times on four efforts to intentionally walk him, bringing his strikeout total to 372. In the bottom of the tenth, Aramis Ramirez, noticing that Homer Bailey’s arm appears to be visibily throbbing and glowing a strange orange, smartly bunts a ball back towards Bailey’s right. Bailey grabs it, fires to first, with his arm detaching from its socket. With arm and ball alike traveling towards Hatteberg, Ramirez is able to beat the throw.

lmao I loved the point about Dunn needing two rotator cuff surgeries from swinging the bat so much

Funny how Livan Hernandez "breaks the rule to all hell," yet has seen a dramatic decrease in his stuff's effectiveness since Dusty decided to ride him into the ground.

Yeah, I just don't get it. Just because a guy keeps pitching doesn't mean his stuff hasn't gone to hell because of the innings he's racked up.

So...the fact that these guys had predictable injury indicators and yet were put out there for the most and second most pitches in baseball is supposed to be excused?

I don't get the argument.

It really does not make sense in how they were allowed to pitch with such bad mechanics. Adding in the fact they were seemingly throwing 110+ pitches every fith day still amazes me and others. I know Prior came into the league with these so called perfect mechanics. Maybe that played a role in the management allowing him to throw so many pitches. I agree with PingHitter in the fact fatigue played a role. I may be wrong, but I don't think Prior every thrown more than 150 innings in his life before that 03 season. Add in the fact he has horrible mechanics and you have your self a major issue. That is why I am worried about Marmol. I don't think he has the mechanics that will keep him healthy to be a starter. He is better suited in that closer's role throwing limited pitches.

You can baby a pitchers arm all you want. Eventually those bad mechanics will catch up to him. When evaluating a pitcher, its nice to look at his stats, but you also have to look deeper. You have to check their mechanics and their other intangibles.

Says Tommy LaSorda as he trades Pedro Martinez away for Delino DeShields. Give me the guy with great numbers and let me protect him over the guy with great intangibles anyday.

Dusty looks great in red.

Posted
I'm calling it now, Red's make the playoffs in '08.

I'll join that bandwagon.

It really wouldnt surprise me. Every time I watch the Reds I wonder why they arent better. Dusty wins manager of the year and by 2010 they are fighting for last place again.

And they could be getting reinforcements on the mound with some really nice young pitchers with electric stuff in Homer Bailey and Johnny Cueto a third of the way through the season. We know Dusty is very willing to play young pitching.

BTW, the Reds have been extremely careful with Homer so it'll be amusing to see what their reaction is to Dusty.

I don't know if anyone caught it, but on ESPNews yesterday, Keith Law did everything short of call Dusty a terrible manager. He said it was a bad fit, because Dusty hated managing young players, and hated players that walk too much. He said he wouldn't want him near Bailey and Co. He insinuated strongly that what happened to Prior, Wood and even Clement was Baker's doing.

He said the only job Baker was suited for was a team full of aged vets on the brink.

He went on to lay out the reason that a good manager wouldn't help a team all that much, but a bad manager (and he was clearly talking about Dusty) could cost your team a lot of wins, as well as damage the future of the team (Cubs).

Now I don't think a whole lot of Keith Law, and nothing he said was a revelation, but it seemed funny since Baker had just worked for ESPN that an ESPN guy would torch him like that.

You know...Clement is so invisible that I think he gets forgotten about, but he was a really good pitcher for the 3 years the Cubs had him. Gotta give Hendry credit for letting him walk though. He's been nothing since leaving, and it's largely because of injury. His injury sounds mysterious and vague kind of like Prior and Wood's injuries have been too.

Part of it was taking the line drive and then right before the playoffs, he almost got hit again against TB and it spooked him. He was always all arm when he pitched, but he was flinching and not following thru at any contact at the plate.
