i would like, someday, to be in a position to say "no" when someone offers me $1 billion for something

I'd love to even be in a position to say "no" when someone offers me $1M for something.

I'm thinkin' I'd be more excited about being in a position to say yes.

I'm really hoping for Wrigley not to be renamed. It was bad enough seeing the Indians front office give Richard Jacobs the finger.

If Zell has really become the Cubs CEO, I'm surprised no one has created a petition to convince him not to do so and that might be the best chance to avoid him spitting on William Wrigley's grave (which Zell would be doing if he renamed the ballpark). Although if the park did get renamed, one way the fans could fight back would be to attend fewer games.

I hope Cuban ends up buying the Cubs. He seems cool.

First, Zell is not the CEO of the Cubs...he is CEO of the Tribune Company. Go to the cubs web site and under the roster link is a link to a list of front office personnel...you will not see Sam Zell's name anywhere. There is no CEO of the club right now nor president since McD left. Why put someone in a position where they will ultimately be let go?

Cuban has a good a chance of buying the club as I do.

You may very well be right, but just so you know, if Cuban DOES buy the team, this will be my new sig... 8-)

i've almost conceded to the fact that Wrigley will be renamed. it just happens everywhere. Joe Robbie, Jacob's....doesn't matter who you paid tribute to, someone will come in with a bag full of $$$ and that'll be the end of that

Being that I cannot afford it I have no chance and neither does Cuban. Sorry.

You have as good a chance of knowing who will be able to buy the club as I do. Sorry.

See it works when I do it, too. Just make a statement and pretend I know more than everyone else.

Also, since you are making this statement on a message board on the internet I have to assume I can't believe it. Your rules.

I have a problem with this part of the article...

The Cubs want to sell the park to the Illinois State Facilities Authority to keep a new owner from moving the team.

"We worry about a new owner coming in and deciding, 'Do you go the way of the Yankees and destroy [the ballpark] and rebuild somewhere else?' or 'Do you go the way of Fenway and rehabilitate it?' " Kenney said.

"We'd like to bind the new owner to play at Clark and Addison for the foreseeable future."

It would seem to me that they are locking the new owner into a stadium deal in the short term, but are making it more likely that the owner will move the team in the long term. If the owner has to pay rent and doesn't have flexibility to make changes to the park, why wouldn't he consider other options as soon as the contractual obligations are fulfilled? I think people should see through Tribune Company's attempt to make this sale about keeping the Cubs in Wrigley Field, when it is truly only about squeezing every last penny out of the team.

I agree with that assessment. Selling the park separate from the team and signing a deal before selling the team would lock the team to the stadium for as long as the deal is for. But it could guarantee the team will try to leave as soon as the deal is completed since the team and its owners would have no stake in the park itself.

I also think it could be shortsighted in that it could lower the price (value) of the team itself. The new owners would be purchasing the Cubs without the park. That's going to lower the asking price considerably. Furthermore, if the lease signed with the Illinois State Facilities Authority is not a favorable one, potential owners may lower their bid knowing their ability to make a profit will be hindered by an unfavorable lease or by demands of the Authority that controls their venue.

I think the idea that it guarantees the Cubs stay playing at Clark & Addison is just spin to justify selling the two entities separately.

You just might be surprised what I do and don't know...

That is all a matter of semantics and I am referring to bloggers who try to pass themselves off as journalists.

This "bloggers aren't journalists" stuff isn't exactly breaking new ground. No one goes to deadspin and takes that stuff as gospel truth. But anyone that is a member of a "fraternity" that employs people like Phil Rogers, Jay Mariotti, Charley Rosen, etc... needs to take a big-ass leap off their high horse.

Does anyone else see a little bit of irony in this post?

I emailed the Wrigley Company to ask them if they would consider purchasing the naming rights to Wrigley Field and this is the response I got back from their PR people:

Dear Tony,

Thank you for contacting the Wrigley Company to request information. We sincerely appreciate your interest in our Company and brands.

At this time, we do not have any plans to purchase rights to the name, however we will be happy to pass your comments and suggestions on to the appropriate people.

We hope this information has been helpful. If you have any additional questions or comments please feel free to contact us at 1-800-WRIGLEY Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST.

This is a message board and not a blog...big difference.

Not understanding why the boys here are always wanting to fight with me and challenge everything I say. Been a little more vocal of late because what I say no longer affects my employment as it did in the past.

No, before you ask, I am not Carrie Muskat or any other beat writer.

Why should they, it'll always be known as Wrigley. Free advertising for so long, I can't blame them.

I bet its because they're sexist and not because you're an anonymous internet poster.

Figured as much when you said you weren't going to the Cubs convention this year. Guess it doesn't really matter... posters should be judged by their accuracy and knowledge and although some don't always agree with your point of view, for the most part you seem to be dead on with your info.

As far as Cuban, why do you believe he has no shot? He seems to get what he wants and he definitely has the money to buy the team.

Cause he doesn't go over to Bud Selig's house to dine on human flesh once a week.
