Get ready to be sick guys...

Zell will consider selling Wrigley Field naming rights

Yep, I guess AT&T Field DOES have the same ring to it....

](*,)

Do you really care what the place is called?

I think the implication that the name means nothing is absurd. I agree it would not be the end of the world, but the name "Wrigley Field" does carry weight, and is an iconic name.

And when it's called Wrigley Field at Boeing Park, people will still refer to it as Wrigley.

I'd be interested to see how WM. Wrigley Jr. Company handles these negotiations. I doubt they offer as much as some companies would to change the name, but they've been enjoying a free ride, so to speak, with the naming rights for several years. They may find it worth while to spend several million to keep it Wrigley Field plain and simple. And the Cubs may find it better to take a little less to keep it Wrigley Field as well.

Zell is out there talking about selling things off bit by bit to drive up the total price right now. He's floating the idea of a name change as a way of giving the new owners a trial balloon to judge how hard it will be to pull it off. My guess is the new owner will buy the Cubs/Wrigley/Comcast for around $1B, and they will then sell naming rights while trying to keep Wrigley Field in the name.

Frankly, I would much rather see them stay in Wrigley Field, and Wrigleyville, and have naming rights, increased ad sales, grandstand renovation and all the works, than see them move to some god forsaken megamall in the suburbs.

Do you really care what the place is called?

Definitively and unambiguously, yes, I care about what the place is called.

With the recent trend for acceptance of increased revenue in exchange for lost ambiance and tradition, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised if some people give a slight pause, groan, but then eventually accept this proposal. Personally, I'll hold a grudge towards that geriatric elf until he chokes on dry toast.

Even in the hyper-cynical realm of the sports world and this message board, I hope that the majority of Cubs fans would see this as an untouchable. UnderArmour ads on the walls ... ugh ... but I'll deal. Eyesore centerfield batter's-eye outhouse - pointless, but I can live with it. New Japanese-language advertising to "welcome" Fukudome and increase marketing to Asian-American baseball fans: blah, but more fans is always a good thing I guess. Changing the name of the field (one of only a few truly iconic items associated with the team ... ivy, scoreboard and marquee complementarily) is a taboo, hands-down.

Yes, it's advertising already, I know. But there's still something to be said for tradition and posterity, in despite of trends. Identity is a term over-used and under-valued, and the Cubs, Cubs fans, and Wrigley (like it or not) are elements of an identity tied to Chicago National League baseball. Start messing with the icons of that identity, and you won't have to move the team to the suburbs to achieve that perfectly sterile, mega-mall, baseball+sushi+convenient shopping+all brought to you by our good friends at Verizon type of atmosphere ... you'll have it on-site in the [insert corporate name here]-ville neighborhood that the ballpark's located in already.

When it comes to renaming Wrigley Field: go to hell, Zell. [-(

... feel free to move to rants, if necessary.

Barring a ridiculous "highest ever" fee, and the current highest would be the Mets stadium at 20 million per season, no thanks. If someone would pay 30 million dollars a year to name it and ownership would commit to 100% of that being reinvested in the team, ok, I'll bite. I'm sick of the near 100 year drought a lot more than I'd be of a new stadium name.

I'd be perfectly happy with a brand new stadium not called Wrigley in any way.

Same. As long as it's not out in the suburbs.

My "dream" has always been a new retro-Wrigley-style park somewhere right on the lake, like Northerly Island. Wouldn't really be practical, though, and it would probably be cold as all hell in the early and late season months.

No offense, but that's ridiculous. No ownership group is going to commit to 100% of any revenue source to be "reinvested in the team", nor should they.

Word from the O's insiders is that Cuban is set to buy the Cubs within the next two days.

Not a chance. If they are now just getting to review the clubs financial records, it cannot happen in two days and most of baseball is out for the holidays. First Zell would need to select who he wants to sell to and I think he has bigger fish to fry revamping the executive level of Tribune. Then it needs to be approved by the ownership committee. THEN, it goes to the owners who would have to meet and approve the deal. That doesn't happen in two days.

Who the heck is O's Insider anyhow? Sounds like a blog which means don't believe it.

This reply is absolutely hilarious. I love it.

How did I miss this? Classic!!!!!!

Again, care to explain why this is "classic"? Yeah, I am a little offended. Sorry but I don't spend my time reading every baseball tidbit and every thread on this board. I read what interests me and there was nothing to indicate to me that this person was not being serious.

The reply to your post was probably in poor taste, but the original poster was making an inside joke regarding the O's. There would have been no way for you to tell that he was joking, unless you had followed the Roberts-gate scandal (regarding the outed Oriole Hangout insider). The poster kept saying "Roberts to the Cubs is IMMINENT" etc. etc. It came down to the point where he was stringing everybody along, and his "inside source" was setting him up with bad info to expose him.

Do you see this deal happening before opening Day? And if it does do you think the Cubs and MLB will give Cuban a fair shot? or was Canning and Co. the chosen owner all along?

I stand by my initial reply. His follow up "offended" post was even funnier.

I remember when everyone was up in arms about Bears Football presented by Bank One. No one even remembers that, other than the marketing guys who have richer pockets these days.

That's because it was a general misunderstanding of what that agreement actually meant, though. At first, a lot of people widely believed that they sold sponsorship for the official team name.

Oh certainly ridiculous. Nothing about my love for this team and it's icons has ever been rational.

I would be INCREDIBLY pissed if they changed the name of Wrigley. Is nothing sacred anymore? It's not "just a name." It's a symbol and a landmark; an American Icon, if you will. Can you imagine the uproar to be had if the federal government, in an attempt to increase revenue to pay off the national debt, would sell off naming rights to national landmarks? Would visiting the "AT&T Statue of Liberty" or "The Budweiser Grand Canyon" really be as appealing? And what about all the merchandise they sell with Wrigley on it? I know I certainly wouldn't buy a shirt that said "AOL Field" on it.

Why not just take down the ivy, scoreboard, and basket while we're at it, too?

The Cubs make a TON of money. They don't need to prostitute themselves in this way.

A question was asked. The answer was apparently no.

Let's all chip in and rename it "Zell Sucks Field"

Best idea yet.

Count me as someone who would be very angry if they renamed Wrigley. Wrigley Field is one of the most pure things left in baseball (I know its not completely pure, but more than just about anything else). The tradition/atmosphere associated with the Cubs is one of the fews reasons I can be proud to be a Cubs fan.

What do you have against prositutes?

They're too expensive?
