Cubs Prior could land with Padres?

The Padres must fill out the rotation. Mark Prior, Matt Clement, Brett Tomko and Josh Towers are candidates to join Jake Peavy, Chris Young and Greg Maddux. -- San Diego Union-Tribune

Those are just suggestions from writer Tom Krasovich: http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/padres/20071003-9999-1s3padres.html

That makes more sense. Prior isn't really a guy you'd think about "filling out your rotation" since he hasn't pitched effectively since 2005. But he is still a name some people outside Chicago recognize.

My worst nightmare is Prior returning to form with some other team after recovering from the surgery.

I wouldn't say it's my worst nightmare, but I do fear that happening.

I more than fear it...I'm resigned to the FACT it will happen.

And SD seems like a likely place.

I still think he will be our #5 next year, though.

Especially in his hometown of San Diego.

I hope you are right. I really think he deserves one more chance...don't "count" on him...just like this year...but see if the injury really was what was the problem....Carpenter had a LOT of success after this surgery...if Prior can do the same it'd make us a much better team.

the good thing is we can take our time with him, as we've already got 6 or more options for decent starters under contract. Z, Lilly, Marquis, Hill, Marshall, Gallagher, maybe even Hart. Let Prior come back at his own pace and regain his confidence.

The only way the Padres get Prior is if they pull a Marcus Giles and the Cubs fall for it by non tendering him.

I'd be furious.

I don't want to 'give him time'. I mean patience yes within reason, but I'm pretty sure we don't own Prior beyond next season, meaning that we need to see what we have with him before we lose him.

I'd certainly take Khalil Greene for Prior were it possible. Maybe include Theriot so they get a SS back in exchange, and they include a young mid-level minors pitching prospect.

Doubt the Padres like that trade, however.

One more thing I might add is that the Padres are cheap. Brian Giles wanted his brother on the team last year and it wouldn't have taken much to trade for him.

Instead, the Padres held out and Atlanta ended up non tendering Marcus. The Padres would probably do the same sort of thing with Prior.

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a little tampering going on there, either. It's probably completely up in the air at this point whether the Cubs tender or non tender Prior for 2008.

I'm sure Prior and his dad are well aware of this, and I'd almost guarantee that if he's non tendered, he'll end up in San Diego.

Source? Or is this just speculation?

Isn't Maddux a free agent after the season? Has he made any comments about retiring or does he plan on coming back? If for nothing else, I'd like to see him pitch at least 1 more year to pass Clemens on the all-time wins list.

Bruce Miles says otherwise, so, unless you have some sort of source, it'd be nice if you stopped stating this as though it were a fact.

I think it is pretty clear that this is my opinion only. Miles certainly has access. But are his statements more than his opinion based on what he knows?

Based on the numbers involved, I can't the see the Cubs tendering him a contract. They might try to get him to bite on an incentive-laden two-year deal, but, in my opinion, he would never take that from the Cubs.

Did Bruce comment on the board that Prior was going to be tendered? If so, that is good news.
