I'm wavering on this one. I think Holliday probably did not score, but what happened with his left hand is obscured in some of the camera angles. It looks like he might have gotten it under Barrett's foot and got stepped on, but I can't tell for sure one way or another.

Barrett wasn't in a huge hurry to tag Holliday after he dropped the ball. He was just kinda lackadaisical. I think that if Barrett showed more urgency in getting the ball and tagging Holliday, he might get the benefit of the call by McClelland.

SD scared me more. Both Philly and Colorado can hit, but compared to the AL, this penant is really winnable.

SD didn't scare me at all I was hoping they would have won because I thought they were the worse team.

Giles has a weak arm. He may not have set his feet, but he was somewhat coming in on the ball.

What an absolute garbage call from a great ump. If he thought Holliday hit the plate, he would have emphatically called safe when he saw the ball on the ground. Instead, it looks like he didn't want to call a guy out who might be knocked out or wasn't going back to touch the plate. He gave up on the play. Very weak.

hahaha he did come out with blood on his face and the crowd is chanting MVP

lolololol

Probably got a text message from Scott Boras saying that image all over ESPN would be worth an extra 3 million a season.

That's what he kept saying in the interview - that he got his hand stepped on. Could just be saying the 'right' thing....

a couple things

re: protest, there is no protest for judgment calls, only rules interpretations. the Reds protested because they thought the ump misinterpreted the rule regarding notifying the ump about a double switch. if you were able to protest judgment calls, there would be about fifty replay games at the end of the year

re: instant replay, if they are going to institute it, the should make sure their camera shots include the flight of the ball, the glove, and the base. there were two really close calls at first tonight where you couldn't see everything you would need to overturn a call.

Looking at the two angles, I really think he got his hands under Barrett's foot, either pushing his way under or as Barrett was moving his own foot back. Watch the backstop angle...Barrett's foot moves back over/along the plate. The 3rd base angle shows Holliday's fingers wedged against/under Barrett's shoe the entire time he is moving forward and past the plate. It's not clear, but putting the two angles together I think he would have at least gotten the plate with a few fingertips.

How ridiculous is this Rockies-Phillies matchup? Who would have thunk it at the beginning of the year?

On another note, the o/u for runs scored in this series has to be something like 75.

beginning of the year? Would you have thought it two weeks ago?

I don't think McClelland saw the play well but he had to make a call. So he replayed it in his head and decided he was safe.

[ Hypothetical ] I'm afraid had there been instant replay, there would have been no "indisputable visual evidence" that Holiday was out. [ /Hypothetical ]

That being said, I thought he was out.

Figures that Barrett would mess it up.

Nice face plant Holliday.

No, he didn't. He blocked it perfectly. McClellan blew the call.

THANK YOU.

I still think it's possible that Holliday's finger snuck through Barrett's spike and grazed the plate after his spike, but Barrett was not at fault on the play, by the time the ball got to him, Holliday was sliding in. He could catch the ball cleanly, and he still would've had to run down the prone Holliday and tag him out. Barrett's the only reason there's a damn controversy because he did a great job of blocking the plate, not allowing an inch for Holliday to hit home plate on the corner.

Never know though thats 2 outs no one on in a tied game anything could have happened.

2 outs, runner on 1B.

/nitpick

any runner still on first with that rainbow throw and the catcher dropping the ball should be shot.

It doesn't matter what kind of throw it is or what happens at the plate, as soon as he sees the guy from 3rd trying to score, he goes to first. Something tells me they're not gonna cut the throw off.

PROTEST! Why did Mclellan wait to make a call and then call him safe. What a blown call!

Colorado will just protest the protest, showing the blown homerun call that should have ended the game in the 9th.

It wouldn't have ended the game though. San Diego still had 6 outs left and the game would have been different with Colorado up 2 rather than just 1. You can't definitively say that the blown HR call forced the game into extra innings. It's the butterfly effect.

In this situation, the blown call at the plate ended the game. It's over now and the Padres can't do anything about it. They don't have another at bat to come back. This was it.

Thank you.

I thought the same thing, though this possibility looks a lot more plausible in the angle from down the left field line than in the angle from above home plate.

OTOH, home plate was awfully clean. If his hand got through, I think it would have brought at least a little dirt through, and I think we had a clear and close enough shot that it wouldn't take much dirt to show up on our view.

Calls get made, things happen. The ump was waiting to make teh call because he wanted to see if Barrett held onto the ball. He did think that Holliday slid under the tag, it would be tough for anyone without instant replay to say. We have instant replay and crazy camera angles so we can make more informed decisions, he has to make one in a few seconds.

Either way, I feel like Colorado deserved this one. Well fought, guys.

Through all of this arguing about the seventh inning home run/non-home run and the 'was Holliday safe?' debate, the most important thing is...THE CUBS ARE IN THE MOTHERFLIPPIN PLAYOFFS!!!

There's nothing like a fresh dose of perspective.

Barrett and his inability to catch the ball may have cost the Padres the game but, what the heck happen to Trevor Hoffman? Two consecutive blown saves? When was the last time he did that?

I was rooting for the Padres in the hopes of a Cubs-Padres NLCS in which, I envisioned the Cubs coming back from being down 3-1. In the most painful way possible - game 7(assuming the Cubs are the home team), down a run, bottom of the ninth, Cubs down to their last strike, Theriot beats gets on with a infield single. Derek Lee comes up, gets down 0-2 and then hits a HR into the RF basket. Revenge for 1984.

I'd rather avoid all that drama and sweep in my fantasies.
