can we put "Astros" in the word filter please? it's about as funny as "Yankmes" and "Muskat"

It's not supposed to be funny (I hate them deeply), but I'll cease it if offends your humor sensibilities.

The main goal is to win the series. I highly doubt Cubs will do that, but whatever.

Woody Williams says hi.

Woody williams and his 2.25 ERA in 4 starts against the Cubs this year?

marquis sucked tonight, by the way.

True, but the majority of the blame should go to the offense and the opportunities they missed.

It's definitely a team loss. The offense sucks. Kendall sucks. Marquis sucks. Lou is an idiot.

the good news is that Lidge is probably burned for the next two games

Not to worry. I'm sure the Astros will have an offensive explosion the next couple of games against Trachsel and Hill that'll make Lidge's presence unnecessary.

I'm aghast that a team of supposedly major league baseball players is befuddled by the Astros, who are all of nineteen games under .500 coming into tonight.

Quite honestly, I don't want the Cubs to make the playoffs. Just go on a nice 10-game losing streak and end this crap already, because they've proven they obviously don't want the division badly enough.

I feel your frustration, but look at the Cards last year. Let's just get there and see what happens. Making the post season is great no matter what your record is.

I'm not sure why Kendall is included in there. He went 1-2 with a walk, that hit was a double scoring the first run, and he got 2 sacrifices down. He did let a run in on defense, but overall he was a net positive on the game, which there weren't enough of tonight to single him out.

The people who really didn't come through tonight include Soriano, Theriot, Ramirez, and Lou.

Yeah, but do you really think the Cubs are going to do what the Cardinals did? It would be just like the Cubs to win exactly 83 games, make the playoffs, and then get swept in the first round.

Have people not figured out yet that this is a .500 team and no matter how upset you get with them they are still going to be a .500 team? If by some stroke of luck being a .500 team is good enough to make the playoffs they will. Then they will probably lose in the first round in 4 games. No point in getting all worked up about it every night like this some awesome team that is way underachieving.

I just felt like throwing him in there because he looks like popeye and I don't like him. Free Soto.

Theriot has been atrocious lately, and I hate the fact that I have to see Soriano suck for the next 7 years. Aram gets a pass because he's been pretty good lately.

I don't even know what Lou's doing. He's starting to lose it.

The problem though isn't that people are expecting a .500 team to overachieve.

It's that people expect this team to earn their $100 million+ salaries. And frankly, a .500 record ain't cutting the mustard when you have hundreds of millions committed to franchise players over the next four seasons or more.

I know what you're saying. Why make it, barely, just to bow out straight away. I feel ya...I really do. They could get hot at the right time (October) and ride it...you never know. Then again they are the CUBS.

The problem with this argument is that baseball is fun to watch. It's fun to root for your team. Why on earth you wouldn't want the chance to get to root for your team in playoff games is beyond me. Obviously it would suck if we made the playoffs and lost every game 14-0, but are you really that down on things that that's what you think would happen?

Because it keeps Hendry around?

It's about 400 million or so their committed to...money well spent

This topic was already addressed in Derwood's thread a few days ago, so maybe we should move it here, but I don't understand why anyone thinks Hendry is fired if the Cubs miss the playoffs.

At this point it doesn't matter what the payroll is, after 140+ games you know what this team is. Maybe they will get lucky and run off a 10 game winning streak, or maybe they will get unlucky and run off a 10 game losing streak. But most likely they will be 10-8 the rest of the way and hope that Milwaukee fades.

Hendry's going nowhere after this season given how late the sale will take place.

Unless his ticker gives out like it almost did last offseason.

Looks like the sharp glass I want to drive Alfonso Soriano's blue Hummer over.
