i just hope everyone is mentally preparing themselves for a playoff roster that includes Trachsel but not Marshall

Not if this trend continues.............

04/02 - 09/10 IP H R ER BB K HR PC BB/9 K/9 HR/9 WHIP ERA
Marshall 98.7 100 48 43 32 61 13 1548 2.92 5.56 1.19 1.34 3.92
Trachsel 8.0 13 9 9 2 3 0 129 2.25 3.38 0.00 1.88 10.13

Seriously I cant believe we took a guy out of the rotation with those numbers, to replace him with somebody who hasnt put up those numbers in quite some time, if ever.

Cubs miss Roy Oswalt and recent Cubs Killer Wandy Rodriquez vs. the Stros. The only matchup that scares me here is Traschel/Williams. Its like one of those Maddux/Glavine type old timers duels, only they suck. I assure you that Trasch will be on a short leash.

If Trachsel is on a short leash for this game, hopefully Marshall is ready in the bullpen to fill in any missing innings and receives a chance to earn his job back.

Marshall is supposed to pitch in one of the games on Saturday, so I don't know how much he'd be used on Thursday. Kevin Hart will probably be available to pitch, unless Marquis flops tomorrow night.

I think Trachsel is going to be used as long as possible with 4 games in 3 days against the Cards this weekend. Marshall is scheduled to pitch game 2 of the DH on Saturday, so he's not likely to be used out of the pen. I'd much rather see them go with Hart or Gallagher as a long man...or better yet...not need to use a long man...

i just hope everyone is mentally preparing themselves for a playoff roster that includes Trachsel but not Marshall

Disagree, they'd go with Marshall for a potential roster due to his leftiness.

you're right, they'll keep them both and leave Murton off

I don't know what's the point of having both Tracshel and Marshall - how many long men do you need, esp. with 4-man rotations (and sometimes 3-man rotations)?

try thinking like Hendry instead of like a logic-minded baseball person

I heard an interview with Trachsel right after he started, and he was saying things like "I dont think they want to put a guy whos never pitched out of the pen, in the pen during a playoff run so I expect to be starting". Granted this could just be Trachsel talking, but I have a feeling Hendry has told him hed be starting, and not used out of the pen.

I'm referring to the playoffs. There's no reason for a 5th starter to be starting in the playoffs since you have a 4-man rotation. There's no reason for the 6th man to be on the playoff roster because you need only one long man and that will be the 5th starter.

We've seen Hendry (w/ Baker) put together one playoff roster. Where was Estes in 2003? Hendry won't break what is generally MLB norms for playoff rosters.

and right now, trachsel is the 5th starter, leaving Marshall off the playoff roster

Right, I think that will be the case. But I don't expect Trachsel and Marshall on the roster with Murton off. That's the comment I was responding to.

ETA: I could conceivably see Marshall on too instead of Ohman.

There could only be 1 of Ohman, Marshall, and Trachsel, unless you're thinking Kerry doesn't make the roster.

Zambrano, Lilly, Marquis, Hill, Wuertz, Eyre, Wood, Howry, Marmol, and Dempster all would seem to be locks for a potential playoff roster. That would leave one spot. I personally believe Lou would want a 2nd lefty from the pen, and I personally believe he can't stand the site of Will Ohman which leaves Pignatiello or Marshall, which leaves Marshall.

i need to catch a few of these Houston games as i'll probably miss all the Cardinal games this weekend (work/guests)

Your work and guests really need to pester you at a less-pivotal point in the season. That's bullcrap.

A) No such thing as a "perfectly good airplane"

B) I could have been blowing off the Bears game instead, which was equally frustrating to watch.

C) It WAS a less-pivotal point in the season - Cubs were busy getting smoked by the Pirates, not beating the crap out of St Louis.

Who's pitching in this series?

I've heard Backe, Albers, Williams, Patton, and Wandy at various points in the last 2 days.

Is Trachsel for sure on Thursday?

Also, I wonder if Larussa will go with Maroth against the Cubs in place of recently blasted Pineiro. If he is truly a genius he will.

Trachsel is for sure on Thurs(unfortunately) and I believe its Backe Albers Williams. I know we miss Oswalt and Wandy, unless their manager moves the rotation around to have Wandy face us.
