A suspension may not be fortcoming, not should it be unless they can find evidence of a more recent shipment. On the other hand, I'm hoping this turns into a major distraction.

Hopefully, someone will start doing a lot of digging into what "The Natural" has been getting in the mail.

That would be something at least. Right now every red flag in the universe is waving on this guy.

So let me get this straight: this guy is a coke addict, now a drug cheat, and the league is going to just sit by and watch while he carries a team that doesn't deserve a playoff berth to a division title?

I better never hear that MLB now cares about drug use, that's for freaking sure. What a load of crap.

Oh yea, poor Cards being picked on by the media. Is that the excuse this time? Give me a freaking break.

you're right...mlb should step in and disqualify the cardinals from the 2007 season because he got hgh shipments in 2005 and some guy on a message board says ankiel allegedly used coke like eight years ago (and because they don't "deserve" it). let's just see if mlb can mandate a division title for the cubs while we're at it.

the whining in this thread would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic.

Whatever. More of your ultra-sarcastic B.S. I couldn't care less. There are plenty of other things that could be done. How about a suspension, or at least an actual investigation of Ankiel?

But hey, don't let that stop you from acting like a dick.

come on, a suspension? you're asking for a guy to be suspended now because there's a rumor that he received hgh, which wasn't illegal, three years ago? give a me break. that's ridiculous.

if this was a cub player and cardinal message boards were calling for his suspension, we'd all be quoting them here and having a great laugh.

The "Natural" received a 12 month supply of HGH just before MLB outlawed it. Do you really think he didn't use any of that supply after HGH was banned from baseball?

At a minimum, Blind Eye Bud should conduct an investigation.

Take a look at his Minor league stats....

his last year before this came up he hit like 10 home runs...the next year he played (there was an injury year in there)...he hit 21.....

That's hilarious. You mean he became a better hitter when he stopped pitching? Wow, must be PEDs. . . lol

Are you telling me no one in baseball has ever made that jump clean? 11 homers in minor league ball?

Priceless.

I agree. Ankiel and others are better at baseball because they are wearing a Cardinals uniform. I honestly believe that.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go try and catch a unicorn.

I love it when people are just too damn smart to have a sense of humor.

I believe they said that MLB would look into it. But again, baseball didn't outlaw it, right?

Hopefully Ankiel kept a diary of when he used it, past his last purchase.

Steve Howe - repeated drug offender.

Jason Giambi - admitted to using PEDs. No suspension.

Yes, clearly Ankiel should be suspended.

So he bought a legal, permitted substance. It then became illegal. And you feel pretty certain that this means he used it? I don't understand this logic.

Good point. There's been huge one year jumps in home runs by major leaguers that hadn't previously showed power before (or ever again) - just look at Brady Anderson, Luis Gonzalez, Lenny Dykstra, etc. and no one has ever suspected them of steroids use - other than their own owners, the media, etc.

better test geovany soto.

that's different. soto's a cub.

And there are no press reports about him receiving a shipment of HGH in the mail. I know, I know, details, details, . .

three years ago when it wasn't illegal. details, details, details...

that's different. soto's a cub.

And a good position prospect.

That means he must be up to his eyeballs in amphetamines, steroids, HGH, black tar heroin, crack, crank, meth, weed, coke, LSD, PCP, Oxycontin, NyQuil, DayQuil, Allegra, Viagra, Penicillin, Tylenol, Advil, and Peptobismol...

...ALL WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION!

Does it matter? He's a Cub positional prospect which means all the drugs in the world won't stop him from amounting to nothing nor doing anything of note besides sucking.

So much for the feel good story of 2007. The cheater should be suspended now. If the Cardinal organization had an ounce of integrity, they would do it now.

sure you did.

There are so many inconsistencies here.

Those were all major league players who had many years of service as hitters, making much larger jumps in home run production. They were all older than Ankiel for the most part, certainly in baseball life, where you don't see as much improvement year over year.

Ankiel wasn't a ML hitter for years who saw a huge jump. He was a minor league pitcher turned hitter who had almost no ML hitting history. (although if you do some research, you will see he homered a couple times as a pitcher, was a very very good hitter in his prep days, but whatever those are details you won't care about).

Comapring what Ankiel did in minor league baseball to what Brady Anderson did (51 homers) is a grade A joke. A pitiful excuse for a comparison.

The 3 things it helps most with an athlete:

Increase energy and stamina

Build muscle and strength, improve fitness

Accelerate healing

Slate[/url]"]Growth hormone may not lengthen your lifespan, but it can certainly improve your looks. (While HGH isn't as bad for you as anabolic steroids, it does have some minor side effects. Click here for more information.)

That doesn't mean very much for athletes: A chiseled physique won't help you hit a baseball or throw a punch. So far, no one has been able to connect the increase in lean body tissue caused by HGH with enhancement of athletic performance. Unlike steroids, growth hormone hasn't been shown to increase weight-lifting ability; in the lab, it has a greater effect on muscle definition than muscle strength. And it doesn't seem to help much with cardiovascular fitness, either.

So, why do so many athletes take HGH? One possibility is that the drug really does enhance performance but that the effect is too subtle to measure in a controlled setting. An elite athlete might be able to detect very slight improvements in strength and agility that would be invisible to lab scientists or statistical tests. At the highest levels of sport, a tiny edge can make a big difference. Athletes might also derive some added benefit by mixing HGH with other drugs—anti-aging doctors often prescribe growth hormone in combination with testosterone.

It's also possible that baseball players aren't using HGH to beef up at all. Almost everyone who gets caught red-handed claims they were using the drug to recover from an injury. This might be more than a ploy to win sympathy: Some doctors believe that growth hormone can speed up tissue repair. There isn't much clinical work to support this idea, however. One study even found that HGH actually shortened the lifespan of patients in an intensive-care unit.

The most likely reason that athletes use HGH, though, is superstition. A ballplayer might shoot up with HGH for the same reason we take vitamin C when we have a cold: There's no good reason to think it does anything, but we're willing to give it a try. The fact that the major sports leagues have banned growth hormone only encourages the idea that the drug has tangible benefits. Why would they ban something unless it worked?
