I think Soto will get more than "a look" in ST. I think he's gonna go in as the starter. This past week or so has cemented that Kendall won't be brought back.

You really think so?

I'm not sure Hendry is thinking the same thing, and I know Kendall said he'd be very interested in returning.

I mostly agree with this. The only thing that makes me wonder is that it seems pretty obvious to me that Blanco is going to retire after the year. If Blanco retires, Kendall will likely be signed back, and then it will probably be an open competition in ST next year.

I've stated this previously, but I think it bears mentioning again.

Soto may never be this good again in his entire career. Even if he does start next year, I wouldn't expect all-star numbers or anything even close.

That goes with any young player that comes up and does well.

Do you think so? Clearly he should, and there does seem to be some signs that he will. I'm just not sure I see any reason for him to throwaway that money though. Guys usually wait until they no longer have any guaranteed money coming to them before they retire. And while I could see the Cubs and Henry agreeing to some sort of buyout, I could just as easily see Blanco stick around to keep drawing the check.

I agree.

I suppose the above was directed more toward the few people who have said that we will turn on Soto should he not perform up to some mythical level.

He'd likely stick around on the 60 day DL, though.

Soto went 4-for-5 and the Cubs rapped out 13 hits, giving Piniella what he called "food for thought" in considering whether to let the rookie share playing time with veteran Jason Kendall down the stretch.

It shouldent even be a damn question Jesus. The only thing Soto has over Kendall is experience, which shouldnt mean a damn thing considering 3 of our 4 starters are extremely experienced. Hill is the only non experienced guy in our rotation, so there you go Lou, let Kendall catch Hill, let Soto catch everybody else, question solved.

Soto has caught more innings with Rich Hill than Jason Kendall has. Same for Carlos Marmol.

Blanco is not going to retire. I fully expect him to honor his contract unfortunately.

I don't think the money/oppurtunity is going to be there for Kendall in Chicago. I'm just spitballing, so I can't think of a likely destination, but I think Kendall's going to want to be somewhere where he'll start 130-140 games a year, and he'll be looking for 5M+ in return. I don't think the Cubs offer either of those things. I think some team will.

Baltimore and Washington look like possibilities.

Houston seems like a lock if Ausmus retires.

That's what I was thinking, much like the Orioles did with Albert Belle when he couldn't play anymore.

Yeah, if Kendall gets a deal like that he's gone because the Cubs won't offer him that.

As far as the Blanco retiring thing, I could see the Cubs keeping him on the 60 day DL and having him not officially retire. I don't think the Cubs will go into the offseason making moves with the thought that Blanco will be on the roster. I think they'll plan to be without him, one way or the other.

There's no sense in keeping Blanco on the 60 day DL all year, it'll waste an offseason 40 man spot and potentially cost us somebody in the Rule 5 draft. If he's just going to be hidden on the 60 Day DL all season just cut him like we did to Rusch.

guys on the 60-day DL don't count against the 40-man IIRC.

But there is no 60-day DL during the offseason so he'd cost a 40-man spot then.

I dunno...Kendall just gushed about coming to the Cubs...he might relish the role of backup catcher/mentor if it means staying somewhere that he enjoys. There seem to be awful lot of guys that stay on this team for less than they could otherwise get. (Ramirez, Lee, Wood, Todd Walker)

I understand that, Im just saying that the idea of an expeienced catcher is ridiculous when you have a veteran pitching staff like they Cubs do minus Hill.

It will be interesting to see everyone turn on him and throw him under the bus IF he pulls a Fontenot, or to a lesser extent, a Riot.

Oh man you are soooo right its going to be unbelievably interesting man....

sarcasm is unbecoming. you know it will happen, I know it will happen. Just like Fontenot and The Riot were Worshiped. And as a relatively calm observer who maintains perspective, it is interesting. Just because you fly off the handle all the time, I can see why you might not. Clearly you're sarcastic because you're one of the prime examples of flip-flopping.

Whatever man, if only we could all be like you huh

maybe you guys can take your personal pissing match to another forum?

Thanks.

You guys ought to just LOVE this one...this is Hendry on the Kendall or Soto "dilemma"...

General manager Jim Hendry said whatever decision Piniella makes will be the right call.

"It's a good dilemma," he said. "Jason Kendall is a winning type of player. He's done awfully well for us, swung the bat very well here down the stretch. And it's good to see Soto come up and do well. It's another credit to (player development director Oneri Fleita) and our farm system this year.

"There weren't too many people mentioning Soto's name a few months ago, and he's certainly put himself in a great spot here for the future. [Piniella will] figure it out. He'll probably play them both. Enough to keep everybody happy, and then play the hot hand [at the end]."

LOL...yeah all you guys that weren't mentioning Soto's name a few months ago...sheesh...
