Last night at the game, I sat seven rows behind home plate, which for those of you who don't know is one row behind where all of the scouts sit. Last night John Cusack happened to be sitting right behind us and in the bottom of the eighth he asked one of the White Sox scouts why Marmol and Howry weren't called in to pitch. The scout said he thinks Marmol is either slightly injured or he has a very tired arm because he said his arm slot has dropped about 8 inches over the last month. (mind you he has still been very effective) And that for the next week or two we will only see Howry and Marmol when we are ahead, for the meantime at least. After that he is going to have use them everytime he needs them.

Now that is just one scouts take on it, but I thought it was interesting to hear him talk about Marmol dropping his arm slot so drastically. He also did say he thought it was just a tired arm and Lou may try to give him a few days off to rest before the final push.

Take it for what its worth

That doesn't surprise me, glad Lou is taking the right route.

Thanks, mjuedes.

While I wouldn't discount Marmol's arm slot dropping, why would the Cubs use Marmol in that situation anyway? Granted, the game wasn't a blow out or anything, but his value to this team is protecting leads rather than keeping the Cubs close.

You can't use a reliever everyday.

Yeah well John Cusack is a dope. Was he wearing his Sox hat to this one?

I've noticed him arm slot dropping, but there doesn't seem to be much variation in his velocity or location. I really don't know what that means, though as far as a possible tired arm or injury is concerned.

as someone with elbow and shoulder troubles in the past, dropping sidearm was, for me, a way to alleviate the pain. seems like it relieves some of the (unnatural) stress of throwing overhand.

Yeah, I doubt he is injured as well. My feeling from the scout talking to Cusack was he was kind of trying to impress him. But he said all the scouts had been talking about the dropped arm slot. I sat in the same seats last thursday and watched Marmol's stuff and how much it moves from this supposed new arm slot and it looked untouchable.

By the way you have to give Hart credit last night, the kid lands 3 hours before the opening pitch and then comes in with the bases loaded and nobody out and only gives up a run. Clearly the first batter his knees were knocking.

Not sure if it's the wisest idea to put a guy, who has never stepped on a major league mound with not a single empty seat in the house with the bases loaded and nobody out, on the mound with all that pressure with playoff implications. After walking the first guy in 4 pitches, he really settled down and looked very good.

the scout better be sitting in the exact same seat every day or he's running his mouth and isn't seeing jack.

that said hes probably right but on accident.

He said he discussed it with all the scouts that were there (about 12-15). This particular one I have not seen this year, I get to sit in these seats about 10 games a year. But I did over hear someone say that he was a former White Sox pitcher who had his career ended short by a rotator cuff injury and that he has written 2 books on pitching. He was probably mid-40s. If anyone can figure out who he is from that, then god bless. I didn't recognize him.

Let's see, from memory Alex Fernandez, Greg Hibbard and Mike Sirotka all played for the Sox in the 90s and had rotator cuffs end their career. Jack McDowell also did but he's no scout. That's for sure.

I have one of his books. I am at work right now so I cant give the guys name but as soon as I get home I will post it. The one I have is around 40-50 pages. Focus is on conditioning and command of pitches. Uses the KISS principle when it comes to pitching.

I can tell you he is a late 70's mid 80's pitcher.

Marmol's arm slot isn't the only thing that's dropping on the North Side.

Zambrano's IQ? We know it's not Eyre's weight.

Usually when you drop your arm angle over a period of time it is mainly caused by fatigue. Lou has to be careful of Marmol. Like I have said before, Marmol is very prone to an arm injury. If Marmol contiunes to pitch through this fatigue (Mark Prior 2003), then I highly expect some kind of elbow injury in the near future.

Now (1-2 years) would be a good time to trade Marmol.

Get someone good back in return and watch him fall apart in another city.

If you use past Cubs logic, they trade him he becomes the next Mariano Rivera

Larry Monroe? He's in charge of Major League Scouting for them.

Eric Patterson's bank balance (I suspect he's been fined as well as demoted for showing up late repeatedly). :D
