This is directed towards the minor league faithful, but anyone who has any perspective is welcome to chime in as well.

How was Ryno in his first year of managing? What did he do that you liked, and what did he do that you didn't like? Being a lifelong Cub, I feel that he is being groomed to take over whenever Piniella finishes up. I haven't payed much attention to his managing style this year though. So with that said, how was he?

I was also wondering about this. I have read a lot of puff pieces on him, but how was he really as a manager. Is he really doing a good job, or is he getting by on his big league reputation.

Also, I was wondering about how he compares to another 84 Cub managing in the minors, Jody Davis. I liked him a lot last year and with these 2 former Cub managing, who is the better manager and who has the better chance of actually making it to the Bigs as a manager.

I thought you had heard...

The minor leagues are supposed to be about the young kids. Helping the kids become major leaguers. He's only out for himself, just like he always was. All he ever cared about was winning - winning - winning.

A real LOSER off-the-field too. No wonder he's headed for a second DIVORCE. LOUSY family man.

The Hall of Fame does not make you a good person. He let it go to his head. I hope to GOD he never ever manages the CUBS. I'll become a Whie Sox fan.

IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!

OK..I have been away from here for quite a while, and I see there is someone who really does not like Ryne on a personal basis, but that does not answer my questions about his managerial abilities. Can I get a straight review of his first year as a manager?

Karenmac would be the person who's seen his moves the most.

As far as Ryno's potential to be a Major League manager, I found that most of his opinions from his brief Yahoo! writing career made me horrified that he could potentially manage the Cubs.

Hahaha, being the lurker I am, those posts cracked me up when I read them. I would love to have a drink with her and find out why exactly she hates Ryno so. This is the same person that hates Mr. Grace for dirtbag-ish reasons, right? She has had to have had some awesome firsthand run-ins with these guys.

Part of the problem in evaluating someone like Sandberg is that the higher ups in the organizations are likely giving him specific orders about things like who pitches on a given day, pitch counts, what they want certain players to work on, and so on. While the Cubs might give him some leeway with certain decisions, I can't imagine they give him free rein on how to use a player.

That said, he seems to have no trouble letting his guys attempt stolen bases and lay down squeeze plays, from the games I've watched.

Outshined, this is very well said. There have been several moments in the season where I thought that Ryno did something that didn't make sense *to me* but I also am not aware of what the organization is asking him to do on a daily basis. For instance, he sent Russ Canzler home in the game last night, and he was dead to rights at home plate. Could it be that he was overly agressive and tried to send him home or was this something the org wants our guys to be working? He tried to do the same with Marquez Smith earlier this week, and somehow Marquez missed the windmill motions of his manager (he would have been a dead duck at the plate too, btw) Overall, a very difficult question to answer. He definitely has the backing of the team - but would guess he's very much a "players" manager.

That said, I would say that Jody seemed a bit more naturally comfortable in the role last year. He was willing to take a lot of chances just to try things (especially early in the season), where as I would say that Ryne is a bit more conservative. Then again, that could be said in general of their personalities, so guess that's likely not a big shock.

By the way, Margaret (Ryne's current wife) is a very nice lady. She sits in our section and has been to nearly every home game this season. Various sets of kids have also visited Peoria this year, and all seemed great too. In fact, she was just mentioning to Mr Mac last night that they are RVing home to AZ after the season is over, so watch out world!

Just my 2 cents. Nate could probably shed some additonal light here as well, as he's spent more time with this team than anyone else.

Happy Labor Day weekend everyone! (oh, and LET'S GO CHIEFS!!!)

Just out of curiosity, why would the Cubs organization want guys to be working on getting thrown out at the plate? Sliding practice?

Posted

no, but Dernier was just here, and they frequently worked on going first to 3rd etc. With Low-A ball, it is more common that the outfield throw will not be anywhere near the catcher, allowing the individual to score, so maybe that was part of it.

Or, we just want our guys to practice trying to mow down catchers at the plate? I don't know! Perhaps this is just the hockey fan in me wishing it were so :) We were ahead at the time, so it was a chance to try something I guess.
