where'd this "uncle" cliffy thing even come from? some pop culture reference?

Nah, it's actually Cliff Robinson's nickname. I just lifted it and used it for Floyd.

ah, i've heard it multiple times for floyd too. the guy on MLB.tv's intro the other night did it a couple times.

Yeah Cliff, nice tailor made double play grounder that sneaked through a drawn in infield that luckily didn't result in the same result that you achieved in every other weak at bat last night.

I'm sorry about your loss, but please try to play some decent baseball for a change over the next 10 weeks, thanks.

yeah, floyd looked terrible last night. i'm happy for him that he got the big hit, but he's going to have to slug at a better-than-juan-pierre rate for me to give him any love.

Ditto. I'd rather have Ward out there with his new found power stroke.

Well, in every one of those threads, the Murton supporters always come back to the argument that the alternatives are terrible. I'm just doing likewise.

None of 'em have been particularly productive.

Yep, they've all sucked. The number one priority on the offseason wish list is a legitimate corner outfielder.

Murton has 4 hrs and 9 doubles in 178 ab's while Floyd has 4 hr's and 8 doubles in 220 ab's. Floyd hasnt hit a hr since June 26, my God thats pathetic.

OPS:

Cliff Floyd .744

Matt Murton .699

The bottom line is that they're both terrible and should not be starting corner outfielders for a pennant-contending team.

And yet, one of them will be, and only Murton has shown signs of being productive within the past year.

Murton should clearly start v. LHP.

Can you explain what you mean by "shown signs"?

OPS v. RHP

Floyd

2006 - .765

2007 - .732

Murton

2006 - .782

2007 - .725

That's virtually indistinguishable

It is reasonable to assume that Murton will improve into a .800 plus ops guy. I dont think its reasonable to assume that for Floyd anymore. Truth is Murton is hitting 40 points below his career average. Just like it was reasonable to expect JJones to improve to his career norms, it is also reasonable to expect the same from Murton. Its not like he is past his prime and injury prone like Uncle Cliffy

I can't believe you really need an explanation, it's fairly simple. Matt Murton was productive last year, and Floyd was not. Given their ages, it could be expected to see improvement in Murton, and not Floyd.

Seriously, you didn't need that explained.

Couldn't agree more. I was thrilled that he got that bouncing dribbler through the gap, but it was a miracle he did. The man looks like a wreck at the plate.

What I needed explained is why you think Murton's .782 OPS v. RHP "was productive" but Floyd's .765 OPS v. RHP "was not productive."

Unless, in your view, the line at which a player becomes "productive" falls between a .765 and .782 OPS.

Seriously, you're asking me to explain something I never said.

Murton was productive last year and is at an age where you can reasonably expect improvement. Floyd wasn't productive last year and is clearly broken down.

It's just asinine to try and pretend the two are in the same boat.
