Two questions.

1. Will Zambrano pitch Wednesday, or even tomorrow night? Starting him on Wednesday (which I believe is the smartest thing to do) will allow him to start the first game of the Milwaukee series.

2. What to do about yesterday's game. Do you think they'll just hold off and play it at the end of the year, if need be? It basically has to be next Monday or after the regular season is over. I'm not sure which I think is best for the Cubs. On one hand, I'd like to avoid playing the game unless it's necessary. But on the flip side, I don't want to play a game against the Cardinals with the season on the line. I don't know. What are your thoughts?

1. they moved Zambrano up to Thursday with Marshall pitching Friday

2. There is Monday plus one day in September where both teams have a scheduled off day

The mutual off days are Aug. 27th and Sept. 10th. On Sept. 10th both the Cubs and the Cardinals are in the middle of road trips. That choice seems unlikely.

My bet is they go with Aug. 27th or October 1st.

Didn't realize a decision had been made on Zambrano. That's good though.

September 10th isn't really ideal for anyone, and I don't see the Cardinals agreeing to it at all. Doing so wouldn't give them an off day for the entire month of September. I see it as either August 10th or October 1st (if necessary).

Are you going to any of the Cubs-Giants games this week?

They are in the middle of a road trip, but both teams are in the area. The Cubs go from Pittsburgh to Houston, so a stop off in Chicago isn't that big of a problem. The Cards go from Arizona to Cincy. Both teams have afternoon games on Sunday, so they could get into Chicago relatively early Sunday night. Then play Monday afternoon and be in Houston/Cincy Monday night before their Tuesday night games.

The Cardinals would then have zero off days from August 28-September 31st. 35 games in 34 days. Obviously September call-ups can ease that stress a little bit, but that's still pretty tough.

We would then have 24 games in 23 days, but have September 20th and 24th off.

I wonder how they are going to get around the collective bargining agreement?

I'm pretty sure they are not supposed to play for more than 21 days in a row without a break.

Anyway, this is good news for the Brewers.

maybe there are caveats for makeup games.

either way, this further points towards how broken the scheduling is. not to sound too "olde thyme", but having some scheduled Sunday doubleheaders would create more off days and make this situation less of a struggle

The rule can be waived for make-up games, although I believe it requires the union's OK. That happened to the Cubs back in 2004 when an entire series in Florida was lost due to the hurricane. The Cubs went well over the normal limit without an off-day at the end of the season, and I think fatigue due to a lack of a day off was one of the reasons for the last week collapse losing the Wild Card.
