He would be a better option than Pagan off the bench. Seriously, Murton and Pie had a good night last night, and need to be given an opportunity to live up to their potential, before replacing either one of them with a cagey veteran.

I'd be shocked if he was brought in to come off the bench. I think he'd take Pie's or Murton's spot, which would be horrible.

Pods would be ok for the last 2 months of the season. The Cubs are now a small ball team and need players to fit that style. Pods can play CF and LF hit 1, 2 or 8 or be solid off the bench.

Like Kendall, it should be a low risk, high reward move. Anything to get the Cubs to the playoffs.

How does this move help us get closer to this in anyway at all?

what is the possible reward? Podsednik is a terrible player and makes the cubs worse replacing nearly anyone on the roster - save maybe kendall.

you want the best players possible, not players that fill "small ball" roles. juan pierre is a "small ball" player. does that mean the cubs should have traded for him 2005?

Podsednik is complete garbage. Bad defensively. No power. Injury prone. I don't see how he helps unless he plays the Doug Glanville 2003 role, and then immediately goes away. There's a reason CWS want him gone. They figured out he's crap.

Is he under contract beyond 2007?

Posted

As long as the player traded for him is of little to no value, he is used correctly, and he is not brought back next season, he might help win a game here or there, as bad baseball players often do.

It's probably not worth the bother.

No.

He'll grind out an extension in no time.

Christ, I don't know if I could handle a Cubs postseason listening to people slobber all over Pods.

I could find a way to live with it.

The problem with Podsednik is that he is only valuabel when he gets on-base....but he doesn't get on-base...

Never?

Sometimes, just not much recently.

And he's also had trouble getting on the field. And again, he's a terrible defensive OF. Where is he going to play?

At this point that's pretty much only as a pinch runner.

Pass.

I really don't think Hendry is targeting Pods in particular. He apparently has put in claims on 8 different guys. IIRC, ist not unusual for GMs to do this when their team is in contention. The 89' (or 88?) A's did it and wound up with both Willie McGee and Harold Baines. The Yanks did it several years ago and had Jose Canseco riding the pine.

I hope this is just a matter of Hendry putting claims out on several players and then evaluating his options from there. This would be a horrible move for the Cubs, especially if they were to give up anything with any amount of value in return. If I were Kenny Williams, I'd probably just let him go... "You claimed him, he's all yours!"
