With the info on Soriano's injury and being out a month the Cubs need a shot in the arm. Now I was kinda vasilating on the trade deadline lack of movement. I felt well the brass obvious feel that what we have is enough and I also felt what if there is a injury or what if it isn't enough! It's time for someone to step up either on the team or in the front office or both. A trade would be nice if it's the right player and the right price. I think it would be great to see maybe some youth come up and hit the hell out of the ball for the next month or so and make a name for themselves.

We need more HRs.

Steroids, anybody?

That would qualify as a shot in the arm, literally and figuratively.

It would be much more likely to be injected into the gluteous maximus than the arm.

What about in the forehead?

Yeah what is up with the lack of the long ball!

Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Floyd... Guys that have had good power in their career all with power outages. It's not a coincidence. All signs point to Gerald Perry.

Makes me wonder if he walked out on them too...

Yeah, but the offense has also been more consistent as opposed to the feast or famine we usually get.

I'll take the feast or famine 2004 offense over this one any day (whether you include Nomar or not).

That's a pretty big assumption. In fact, if I had to bet, I'd bet it has very little to do with Gerald Perry, as there's a reasonable explanation for pretty much all of them:

Lee: wrist injury

Floyd: well-documented age-based decline

Soriano and Ramirez aren't far enough off their career averages to really think it's anything but normal fluctuation, are they?

Edit: Soriano's career ABs/HR: 19.23; 2007: 24.67. So that's a pretty big difference.

Ramirez career: 20.02; 2007: 21.69. That's not too huge a difference.

In any case, there's not much of a compelling case against Gerald Perry here.

After today's loss, the Cubs really need to get into gear in Houston and Denver. Otherwise, I fear this is the week that ends our playoff hopes.

luckily for us, the Brewers are actually playing worse

Yeah, but if they have a long stretch at home and we're not in first, it won't look good for us.

No way does one week end the playoff hopes. Put a dent in them, perhaps. End them, definitely not.

interestingly, the Brewers have slumped at exactly the same times the Cubs have this year. Back in May, the Cubs went something like 10-20 but gained a game in the standings. Likewise, the Cubs are now 5-5 in their past 10 games while the Brewers are 3-7.

With the slight exception of the beginning of the year when the cubs were awful and the Brewers were arguably the best team in baseball ;)

Seriously though, since the plateauing of both teams, you're right... and we're quite fortunate.

This is not how things work.
