comments on the game.. where is the power? this was a great day to hit HRs and the Cubs hit not one. What the heck is wrong with this teams power?

the rotation is really starting to worry me. Other than Z and maybe Lilly, what other starter do you really expect good things from when they pitch? Our offense isn't good enough to compensate for mediocre starting pitching.

I still like our rotation. We played a very good offense and our starters just weren't sharp, but we still fought hard and got a spilt.

Loss definitely falls on Marshall. All we needed today were innings out of our starter- and we got 2.2. If Marshall just gives us 5 or 6 decent innings, Ohman never gets into this game, much less into a situation where our bullpen is so taxed by the 9th that he's got to pitch to a bunch of righties (not that he pitched well whatsoever, of course).

You guys and your sacred cows and your designated villians are hilarious. JJ went 2-5 today. Ohman was brutal, but if anyone deserves to be ranted and railed against for today's performance it should be Marshall by a landslide. The starting pitching, sans Zambrano, has been uninspiring as of late.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled Jacque bashing.

see here's the thing. Some people look at just one game. And then others, like myself, look at how the player has performed during the entire year.

Sean Marshall pitched terribly today. Nobody's arguing that fact. However, coming into this game he had a 144 ERA+ (though he's been lucky) and a 1.25 WHIP, which makes him an asset to the ballclub. Meanwhile, Jacque has a 68 OPS+ (!!!) and two homers in about 300 ABs. Combined with mediocre (at best) defense and lousy baserunning, make him a detriment to the team. So I'll stick up for Marshall despit the lousy performance, and I'll pound on Jock despite what was (at least for him) a really good game.

Marshall for sure and usually Hill. Though with Hill I expect the Cubs to score 0-2 runs as well.

I don't understand the problem with the team's power either. I'm getting incredibly frustrated by it. Before the season, you would have thought that on a day like today, we would have slugged out 3 or 4 long ones. So much for that. Winning is good and all, but to beat good teams, we're going to have to start using some power to win. These guys are going to have to remember that they can hit balls out of the park.

As for the pitching, I trust Hill (for the most part). I'm fine with Marshall too, but his slow working abilities today really doesn't help him out on days like today when it's 90 degrees outside.

I wonder if Jim Hendry looked into obtaining Pat Burrell, given the Phillies lack of pitching, someone like Rich Hill or Sean Marshall would be their No. 2 starter.

There's no way the Phillies are going to make to the playoffs with their staff as currently constructed - they won't be able to outscore teams every game.

no way i'd trade a solid young pitcher on basically a min salary for an overpaid (though he's good) player like Burrell.
