I know he's young, but that rotation will be built around Lincecum and Cain. Plus, they are stuck with Zito. Jonathan Sanchez (another LHP) is in the pen now, but a solid SP prospect. And I believe Lowry should be arbitration eligible this year. If they want to save a few more bucks and get younger in the process, they will listen. They don't have a lot of youth coming up the pipe as far as position players go. I think Lowry could be had for a couple decent IF/OF prospects.

Noah Lowry p

4 years/$9.25M (2006-09), plus $6.25M 2010 club option

signed extension 4/06

$1M signing bonus

06:$0.385M, 07:$1.115M, 08:$2.25M, 09:$4.5M,

10:$6.25M club option

bonuses may increase total value of extension to $17M

escalators may increase 2010 club option to $7.75M

Well crap. I guess they could still trade him, but he's still pretty cheap.

Cubs RF: .285/.354/.365/.720

Griffey: .271/.380/.521/.901

He'd definitely be an upgrade...but so much of an upgrade that he'd be worth losing a starting pitcher?

Depends on how well you think Gallagher could do in Marshall's spot.

Almost .200 OPS points is a MASSIVE improvement. We can't just look past that fact.

I understand that...but is it worth the gamble that you'd be taking in putting a completely untested rookie pitcher into the rotation? I say no. But I understand both sides.

Assuming you think the Cubs still have a good shot at the playoffs with a Gallagher starting the rest of the way, you also have to take into account that in the playoffs, Marshall probably doesn't see much, if any, time, while Griffey can very well have a significant impact.

This is a good point on trading from the rotation to upgrade the offense, but in that case I'd like to see someone with a good long term future brought in return(i.e. Dunn, Teixeira instead of Griffey or Dye).

I wouldn't give up much of anything for Dye. Cedeno (since they have been looking for a SS since Ozzie retired from playing), Murton, and Veal is about the extent of my offer.

You don't really mean that you would give up Cedeno, Murton, and Veal for a 2-month rental of Dye, do you? Kenny Williams can keep Dye.

Consider me sour on the chances of us obtaining Dye. Hopefully the hamburgler realizes that we need a bat who will perform, not a bat who maybe can perform because he has done so occasionally in the past.

A HEALTHY Griffey, is the final piece of the puzzle, for the line-up anyway. Floyd is starting to scare me a little in right. It's almost like he is a walking injury. With Ward out, Floyd could be our lefty power bat off the bench. Spot starting to give Jr. some days off. The only thing that worries me with Jr. is the brick wall at Wrigley.

Lowry's not going anywhere. He's 26 and the Giants will and should be looking to the future. He's in that future.

I think Lowry is in the category where Sabean will trade him if he gets a good deal but he isn't going to actively shop him to other teams. And with the cheap contract he signed at only 26, there could be teams after him.

But like brinoch said, Morris is most definitely on the block. He is not in the Giants' future.

EDIT: And you're right on the Giants not having much in terms of quality position players in the minors.

I totally agree. All of the talk about Dunn is ridiculous, Griffey is the answer. Of course everything depends on what they want for him.

I almost wonder if the Reds don't care about trading Griffey now and will just wait until the offseason and let him get 600 in a Reds uni.

The sad part is that's probably the case. They want a guy who hasn't done jack squat in their uniform (team wise) pass an increasingly meaningless barrier rather than try to get some prospects for him in order to build their organization? What a freaking joke. Have fun in 4th place the next 5 years, Cincinnati. I hope the extra 10,000 "Griffey 600 homers" shirts make up for the lack of organizational direction.

Not that it's anyone's fault, but their fans really got the shaft in the whole Griffey ordeal. He was supposed to be doing what Bonds is doing and they were expecting their team to go on a nice winning run. Well, Scott Williamson and Danny Graves got hurt and forgot how to pitch, Barry Larkin got old, Sean Casey became a homeless man's Mark Grace, and Junior became best friends with the DL. Sucks for them.

The latest from BP:

The Reds have decided not to trade center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., while no team has been willing to meet their high asking price for left fielder Adam Dunn.

Decided not to trade is typically code for waiting for the last minute offers to fly in just before the deadline.

Cincy without any major moves is destined to maintain their level of mediocrity.

I think Cinci is slowly becoming the worst run team in baseball.

Meh, I don't know. If I'm cinci and I don't get bowled over with an offer I hold onto them. Dunn has more value to be traded in the offseason than he does right now. As for Griffey, his value is probably at its highest but as hes not going to be a FA they can wait if they dont get what they want from a contender and probably not lose any value (unless of course he gets injured in the next two months, which is a distinct possibility).

I was trying not to be dramatic, but your point is well taken. How they have not been able to win with as much everday player talent as they have/ had is beyond me.

If his contract for next year is voided if he's traded during this year, how do they trade him in the offseason?

It's not that his contract is voided, it's that the club option for 08 is voided. All the Reds have to do in the offseason is exercise the club option during the window its open, and then trade him off... but they can't exercise that option yet.

I read someplace that if Dunn's option is exercised, he cannot be traded without his permission until after June 15th.

No, I don't have a link.

I think that would definitely go to the Pirates. At least Cincinnatti has what appears to be a bright future.

Bailey

Votto

Bruce

Along with Harang, Phillips & if Josh Hamilton can continue the way he played this year. Granted Krivsky will probably mess it up in some way.

That's what this person is saying here:

• If the Reds exercise the 2008 club option, Adam receives full trade protection during the 2008 season through June 15, 2008 and is then allowed partial protection thereafter through a ten-team list of his choosing of places he would approve a trade to.
