Pierre for Prospects

no devil's advocacy here :( I guess we . . . needed a "lead-off hitter"

Well, I guess the line here would be that he was just getting something his manager valued and thought the team was lacking. Not much of a defense considering that to most it was pretty obvious that Pierre wasn't worth the price we paid. The best I can say is that at least he realized that signing Pierre would have been moranic, especially at that price. Though, he followed not overpaying Pierre with overpaying Soriano.

That was the worst one in my opinion, as I don't really see a problem with trading away Maddux in principle, just what he got from it that was bad.

I also don't see the Barrett/Bowen trade as being a 'negative', more a wash than anything.

Furthermore, the positive weight of the Ramirez/Lofton and the Garciaparra/Murton trades, though Garciaparra didn't work out, still outweigh the negatives presented here. If Hendry is good at anything, it is definitely player acquisition via trades.

I think the Grudz/Karros is the cherry on top. That was a pretty lopsided trade.

I agree. Overall I think Hendry has done very well in trades and he doesn't get the credit around here that he deserves. The Ramirez, Garciaparra, and Grudz/Karros deals were very lopsided to us, whereas even Hendry's worst trades have only slightly favored the other team. Maybe we could have gotten a little more for Maddux, but we were never going to get a top level prospect.

I think Hendry understands the balance between being too cautious and giving up the farm. He has never given up top prospects, yet he has consistently been aggressive in pursuing deals to help the club.

The Cubs need Griffey. With Lee and Sori struggling and the black hole at catcher, Theriot and Fonty cant keep playing over their heads. Floyd will go down soon with another injury. I know we have Murton, but the lack of power this team has is starting to concern me. I just really really hope there is some truth to this rumor. In the past when the Cubs were in the race, Hendry has made some nice moves. Heres to hoping he does it one more time.

Piniella, Griffey trade compliments amid trade rumors

By Paul Sullivan

Tribune staff reporter

CINCINNATI -- Ken Griffey Jr. was on first base in the eighth inning of Friday night's game when he peered into the Cubs dugout and saw manger Lou Piniella making an unusual gesture.

"He stuck his tongue out at me after I walked," Griffey said. "I just kind of laughed."

It's safe to say Griffey is Piniella's kind of player because he plays the game the right way.

I like that article, but I'm pretty sure you can't post full articles in a thread.
Correct. Posting a link to the article is fine, as is posting a small exerpt from the article.

Ugh just as I'm settling with the fact Hendry is going to not make a big move like a Griffey. Stuff like this pops out to make it sting again.

Asked if he would like to play for Piniella again, Griffey smiled and said: "I can't really say anything right now."

No kidding. I know there is almost no chance, but I want to believe there is a little chance.

Griffey seems real open to the possibility. I really hope Hendry makes an effort to land him.

With all those Cubs fans at Wri-- I mean GABP, did Dunn and Griffey get huge ovations when they were announced in non critical situations?

That'd be a great way to send a message to Hendry =]

It doesn't matter how open Griffey is to being traded to Chicago if Krivsky and Hendry can't come to an agreement on terms for the trade. So far, we haven't even heard any solid rumors showing that Hendry was serious about seeing if he could acquire Griffey. I don't like the Cubs chances of making a major deal before the deadline this year.

Exactly. That is why these Griffey likes playing for Lou, Lou likes the way Griffey plays articles or more annoying and more teases than anything (much like the A-Rod articles from the offseason).

Haha let's get delusional for a minute.

By some miracle Hendry gets a deal for Griffey, and then in the offseason some crazy multi billionaire and a couple of his billionaire buddies team up and buy the cubs and the first thing they do is sign A-Rod...

I don't either. And it's probably just as well. Griffey is having a great year but he hasn't been reliable in years -- especially at the end of the season. In fact, he's had pretty good years the last two but found a way to miss most of Sept. both times.

Dunn potentially would be an even bigger problem. If he can't handle RF you run the risk of screwing up Soriano's production by moving him again. Not to mention the fact that Dunn is notoriously bad in September.

Here's a tidbit I recall from last year: The Reds were contending for the first time in years. Their two big bats combined barely managed to drive in one more run (8-7) in the month of September as ........wait for it....................Juan Pierre.

Don't get me wrong; I'll be excited and hope for the best if somehow Dunn or Griffey are on the Cubs this week. But it would be a huge mistake to assume either one will be big producers down the stretch.

Floyd/ Murton works just fine for me. I'm way more concerned with the starting pitching.

i'm still really confused as to why people are really concerned about one of the best rotations in the league.

Agreed. It's been said already, but try and find a team with a better number 3-5 than we have (Marquis, Hill, Marshall). Even with their shortcomings, we're (at bare minimum) average among contending teams.

Any hear ESPN 1000 late last night? They said a deal is "taking shape" between the Cubs and Reds to acquire Griffey. They also said the Cubs have no interest in Dunn. Pie and Murton could be involved and well as a possible 3rd team that would get Bronson Arroyo in the deal. Nothing would be announced until after the Cubs/Reds series.

This makes Griffey's "I really can't say anything right now" quote a bit more interesting, he may know what's going on. It's definitely that time of year ;).

As for my reaction to these recent non-developments, consult my sig. (maybe I should throw Hendry in there too, as he doesn't seem to be making a serious attempt at going out and getting someone who could actually help the club)

I have nothing to base this on other than a hunch, but I think it's going to happen.

I think Griffey would make the Cubs a legitimate WS contender, but throwing both Pie and Murton in the deal is a steep price considering Griffey's age and contract - particularly so if it involves any significant pitching prospect (e.g., Gallagher or Veal).

Well my guess is that we throw Pie and Murton in if a 3rd team is involved. Hopefully in that case we'd get a reliever from a 3rd team additionally. This would be such a huge deal, I hope something happens. Griffey would be awesome.

Well, if it is a 3 team deal, then it would be likely that a prospect would be heading back to the Cubs from this 3rd team. I also would hope that if the Cubs send both Pie and Murton that they shouldn't have to send one of their top pitching prospects, and they get at least one mid-level prospect back in the deal from someone along with Griffey.

I'm just worried about Hill and Marquis pitching past 4-5 innings...

Agreed, but given the state of the Reds starting pitching and Arroyo rumored in the deal, you'd think they'd have to be getting some pitching in return.

My guess is that Murton or Pie would be going to the 3rd team because the Reds have Hamilton, Dunn, Freel, and a couple of decent outfield prospects.

You're clearly a legit poster around here, but I'd still like to confirm from others what was said... hope you understand :)

As for Murton and Pie? that makes me nervous. Hopefully we would be getting a very good/young reliever and/or a B(or better) prospect.

Color me cautiously optimistic.

Al "Mark Prior has toothpicks for calves" Yellon seems to think upgrading the rotation is more important than upgrading the offense.

I for the most part enjoy reading BCB from time to time but some of the stuff he throws out there is just mind-numbing dumb.
