I'm not sure what the Pirates need, but how about a three way deal:

Pirates sending Gorzalanny or Snell to the Braves

Cubs send Marshall plus ??? to the Pirates

Braves send Saltalamacchia to the Cubs

Unless ??? is a top player, why would the Pirates do that?

The Pirates have inquired about Saltalmacchia. For them to accept a 3-way deal, they'd have to get him.

I understand that the Pirates want Salty (as do most of the other Major League teams), but my thought on suggesting the 3-way trade is that they would get a young major league pitcher (Marshall) plus another young player in a position they need (IF, OF, or another P) and possibly fill 2 holes instead of one on their team.

If I was the Braves GM, I would just move Salty full time to 1B and look to deal Thorman.

There has been talk of that happening, but Salty looked terrible at 1B against us.

With enough time and practice, I bet both he and McCann could learn it. Frankly, I'd have both of them learn 1B. Two 1B/C's on the team offers a lot of flexibility.

I love Salty, but he would only be an above average hitting 1B..however, as a C, his value is much higher. They should only continue to play him @ 1B in attempts to show him off to potential bidders.

pie for salty. then sign andruw jones to play cf in the offseason.

i wasn't aware pie was a young impact pitcher

Yeah it starts with Rich Hill or Marshall. Probably Hill. We also have to worry about extending Zambrano first. We've got Z, Lee, Ram, Sori, as 4 really high paid players. We can't just sign every impact free agent every off season. I just don't think it's realistic way of figuring it will work.

I wouldn't. I still think Hill has upside. He's a lefty on the right side of 30 who is not all that likely to suffer arm injuries. His ERA+ this year is still north of 100.
