Ichiro is THE symbol of the Mariner's franchise. He is what they market the team around and has a HUGE asian following in an area with a good size asian population.

He could probably name his price and they'd pay it

What a horrible contract that will be starting...well, starting when it's signed.

See, if this was , that would be correct.

But, as someone has already pointed out, the marketing and attendance dollars that Ichiro brings in probably make this contract about even for the Mariners, if not a good deal. They have probably made more money off of him over his first 6? years than he will make in salary for his entire career.

That being said, I don't know which contract is worse in a strictly baseball sense, Ichiro or Soriano (due to length only)?

I'd rather have the Soriano contract than the Ichiro extension.

Because no team could use a .359/.410 hitter with a little pop, a lot of speed. great defense, and a good arm who sells a ton of merchandise and opens up a huge potential fan base?

He may be expensive....but I'll take Ichiro at that # and not think twice about it....Rickey Henderson averaged a .400+ OBP for another 10 years past Ichiro's current age...There's no real reason to believe that Ichiro won't put up a .320 average with a .375+ OBP steal 30+ Bases and score 110 runs for the next 5 years...those are numbers that would make him very valuable to just about any team

Well, to be fair, 20M isn't what it used to be...

especially when his speed declines and he can't beat out those infield hit anymore.

Thank God.

Ichiro is exactly the sort of player Lou and Hendry nut themselves over... I was very worried we'd trade Pie and try to sign Ichiro to make up for it.

Ichiro's market value is not surprising given Pierre's 5/44 deal. Pierre is supposed to do all the stuff Ichiro does. Thing is, Ichiro does all of it at a vastly higher skill level.

It is simply BEYOND me how people are badmouthing this deal. He doesn't play for some fly over state, he plays for Seattle. He is the Mariners. You're comparing apples to oranges with any non-asian phenom player. Marketing marketing marketing.

Yeah...I think so. Would I rather have him at 16-18? Yes...but if it takes 20, considering what he brings both on and off the field, and that like someone said above, he's not Juan Pierre...he's actually a very good player. I think he'd fit very well with our team...even in right field....it won't happen so it doesn't matter but I think calling this proposed deal horrible is just plain wrong.

That's alot of buckaroonies.

I can see why Seattle did it, Ichiro means alot to that franchise. I wonder how many Mariners unis they sell over in Japan because of him.

I would take Sorianos contract everyday of the week and twice on Sundays, over this deal for Ichiro. At least when Sorianos speed starts going away, he can still hit for power, where as when Ichiros speed goes, Ichiro becomes an averager ballplayer. His entire game is based on speed, which is usually one of the first things to go as you age.

Make no mistake - this is an investment in Ichiro the mkting sensation as much as it is Ichiro the baseball player. This is business folks. He's worth the cash in light of the revenue he brings in.

Oh, and he's a pretty good ballplayer too.

Is 36 - 38 year old Ichiro really going to be the draw that he is now, to make it worth such an excessive contract?

Financially, maybe, with the Japanese market. But he's way down the list of MLB stars right now and he's just going to keep going down. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that contract for such a player. Ichiro isn't going to maintain his contract/career year numbers he has right now. He's most likely going to settle into the very unspecial numbers he put up the past couple years. Nice, good piece of the puzzle, but completely unspecial.

Horrible baseball contract.
