Depends on the Yankees. If they make the postseason AND he plays well, I think he stays in NY, maybe threatening to opt out so he can get a renegotiated deal. If the Yanks miss the playoffs or ARod starts playing badly (relatively speaking, bad for ARod is an OPS below .900), then he may opt out. I don't think it's likely he ends up with the Cubs given that the ownership transition will be going on. He would have to wait until January just to negotiate, and risk a very large pay cut because he waited so long to sign. If he really REALLY wants to play for Lou, then I guess he'd probably just opt out, state that he wants to play for the Cubs, and take a one-year deal knowing he'll get another bite at the FA apple when Lou's contract is up. I think the likeliest possibilities are ARod going to the West Coast to play for either the Angels or the Giants (via trade or opt out, anybody's guess).

I have a feeling that most of the NY fans booing him don't know what OPS is and they just think he sucks because he didn't hit 50 homers.

So, if it's the offseason and we have the choice of spending 7/120 on Zambrano or 6/120 on Arod, which do you choose?

I take Arod, plz.

ARod without question, but I believe those figures are off. As I said above, I see Arod going for 5/150. Z is probably inline. The cubs could have gotten him for 5/85 early on, but I don't know anymore. That'd be a savings of 13M a year, but unfortunately, there really isn't any other shortstop out there on the FA market.

ARod won't be taking an effective annual pay cut to play for anyone, so 6/120 wouldn't get it done, IMO... With that being said, I agree: I'd take the everyday impact player pretty much every time.

Steve Stone was on WSCR today, saying ARod is opting out. Not sure where he got his info, but he wasnt saying might, he said its for sure. Also said both Chicago teams would be at the front of the line.

Stoney's reliable. If we don't get Z, we sure as hell better get A-Rod.

The Cubs would be better off with Z in the long run.

So you're saying Yankee fans are stupid. I concur.

I think it would be more like 5/90 big Z or 7/150 for Arod.

Don't forget the NSBB's term, RGI's. Or stupid media coin phrases like Tatters. What the hell it sounds delicious whatever it is. But they only say it when a guy hit's a homer. D'oh!

If only Lou played Izturis, he'd lead the league in RGI's. We need Lou to post here.

if ichiro is making 20m a year, i shudder to think what ARod is going to make. i have to believe 6/120 is way too generous for him.

Looks like the Yankees are going through some added effort to keep ARod around for a while.

As they should. If he doesnt mind staying in NY then he will stay there. Since the Rangers are on the hook for 33M of his current contract, the yanks are able to offer an extention that is 33M greater than any other team can offer if he opts out of his contract, while still only paying the same amount as any other team.

I bet the Rangers are praying to Vishnu that ARod opts out...wonder if they'll be able to afford Tex if he does?
