Not that I'm one to defend ESPN, but this is ridiculous on MLB's part.

Once the All Star rosters get into the news cycle (especially off an AP report), it's fair game to report as they see fit.

Was it wrong of NSBB to share news of the All-Star selections as they happened, even though we clearly don't have an exclusive arrangement with the MLB?

ESPN was doing its job.

does this mean I won't have to listen to Chris Berman and Joe Morgan doing the HR derby?

I think they still do the HR derby.

If I read the release correctly, they have the HR Derby but will all sportscasters will be in Bristol and not on the field in San Francisco. The only ESPN reporters that will be allowed on site are Peter Gammons and -shudder- Dusty Baker.

This is pretty stupid. MLB is mad because ESPN talked about something that was public knowledge (the All Star rosters)? It's not like ESPN sent ninjas into the TBS studios to find out what the rosters were, and then reported them before TBS did.

They were just doing their job.

As long as the results aired on TBS first I don't see how ESPN did anything wrong (especially given the delay in the announcement due to the length of the preceding game).

It feels strange defending ESPN. :D

Yes, let's come down on the most-viewed sports channel for talking about our game, instead of football, for once in a thinly veiled attempt to make the decision to move huge chunks of prime MLB programming to the Turner backwoods look like somewhat less of a massive clusterf***.

Strange, because the TBS game was rain delayed so I'm confused whether there was a clause in the rights agreement that took that into account and whether ESPN really knew what they could & couldn't do in that situation? The article doesn't mention if there was an agreed-on length for the embargo.

Seems a little heavy-handed, since ESPN did wait until TBS broadcast the results first, correct?

Maybe I'm just stupid, but it's confusing to me anyhow.

TBS Should have not but a game before the selection show. What if that game would have gone 18 innings? We would be waiting til like 10:00 for the results.
That's like saying CBS shouldn't televise a conference championship game before the NCAA selection show in case the game goes into multiple overtime periods.

I think the issue, then, is whether TBS should have gotten the selection show telecast in the first place, not whether they should have a game before that.

I agree with J.R.
