Wow Buehrle caved. He must have really really wanted to stay in Chicago. Odds of him being traded within 2 years of this deal? Ill say 85%

That escalator clause and his 10/5 rights will make trading him next to impossible, imo.

Did they give him the escalator clause? I thought the Sox said no to that.

That's what ESPN is saying:

The contract essentially includes a no-trade clause through the 2008 season, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports, as Buehrle must consent to any deal. From 2009 until Buehrle gets 10-5 rights in 2010, the player can present a list of teams that he won't agree to go to in a trade. From 2010 onward -- since he will have 10 years in the league and five with the same team -- he would have to consent before being traded under baseball's collective bargaining agreement.

The deal also includes an escalator clause that will make the deal worth $75 million over five years if he is traded before the contract runs out.

I wonder how this affects Zambrano's market value and his willingness to accept a home town discount.

Also, Williams was interviewed during the telecast of the Futures Game and he said that the agreement did include trade protection short of a full no-trade clause (although he didn't give specifics).

I don't think he'll be traded. I do think Contreras is as good as gone.

Contreras won't get much in return. I think the White Sox were really in a bad way because of Buerhle's popularity in Chicago, but he was their biggest hope to get 1-2 top prospects from another team. With Reinsdorf as owner, I can't see the Sox making too big a splash in the free agent market. The future doesn't look good with three teams better than them in their division and two of the teams are much younger.

I'd guess that Buehrle's signing will have little to no affect on Zambrano.

Nice job by both sides, Williams locked him up below market value for 4 years. Mark gets to stay where he wanted to be and has enough clauses in the contract to where he'll likely stay in Chicago for 4 years.

Seeing something like this makes me envious when thinking about Carlos and his upcoming FA.

Cubs fan would kill to see news like this about Zambrano (Z will command more obviously).

What about 2008? Buehrle for 5/75 isn't the worst thing in the world.

Not just that, but by the end of the contract, he shouldn't have declined in production that much.

Great news for the Cubs, as he was also rumored to be a possible acquisition for the Cards and Crew.

ESPN 1070 in Madison local report led off with the story -- they're clearly disappointed he's off the market
