The deal collapsed, however, when incoming Cubs owner Sam Zell – who is in the process of purchasing a controlling interest in the Tribune Co., which publishes the Sun-Sentinel – vetoed the hefty cash exchange.

Doesn't sound like Hendry's fault.

So Zell won't even let this happen because of financial ramifications? How in the world do we expect to add any kind of payroll through the trade market?

Somehow I feel Zell may hamstring our efforts to improve the team this year.

Damn Sox fan!

Yeah, so much for adding onto payroll like Hendry has said over and over again. And we're pretty much stuck with Jones if Zell won't let the Cubs eat his contract. Fun times.

This would have been a dumb deal. If they are going to pay pretty much all his salary they may as well keep him around as a bench player. It's not like they have anyone significantly better to replace him in that role. Murton could come up but he is better off getting regular at bats at AAA instead of rotting on the bench.

I don't completely get this. Zell has made no commitment whatsoever. he's got the Trib bent this far over the barrell even though there's a large chance he doesn't go through with the deal.

more than the Cubs showing they have no leverage when it comes to a Jones deal, the Trib just showed their lack of leverage in the corporate sale.

I can't believe Hendry bothced this...good grief.

Hendry didn't botch anything. The deal as reported was a horrible one for Chicago. He was right not to pull the trigger too quickly, especially if any other team was remotely interested.

What if one of the other rumored teams saw the Marlins low-ball offer and realized they easily do better and still come out the winner in the deal?

Hendry didn't have to make a move today. If he can get a better deal than paying 75% salary and getting nothing in return, then he should hold out.

THere is no better deal for Jacque Jones. He has 0 value.

Yeah, hitting 27 HRs and 81 in full-time duty last season really sucks. A definition of no value is Macias.

As people have stated previously, I don't think this is Hendry's fault. And moreover, I don't think he knew about the inability to take on payroll until this deal. Talk about a wake-up call you don't want when your job is on the line.

Well, this is really disappointing (the trade didn't sound great, but what we've learned about Zell is disappointing).

If Zell has this much control over the Cubs, shouldn't he have to divest himself of his interest in the Sox? This sounds like a conflict to me.

Exactly. How is this okay? He owns the White Sox, but because of the sale of the Trib he gets final word on Cubs' transactions too? Terrible.

Ok, I'm seriously pissed at this. Zell is a PROSPECTIVE owner. He shouldn't have any say in management unless is was specifically outlined in an agreement. I doubt this, because the Trib would be otherwise hamstring in its cash management. Someone is trying to maximize his return over caring about team success.

I disagree. Jones has pretty much given up. I'd much rather have a guy out there willing to give 100% than someone giving half effort.

This is the first of many trainwrecks this organization will endure courtesy of Zell.
