FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Jacque Jones-to-Florida deal won't happen, "barring an unexpected reversal."

The Marlins wanted Jones as their primary center fielder, but apparentely the Cubs were quite desperate enough to get rid of him. Either they refused to pay the majority of the $7 million he's still owed or they wanted a better prospect in return if they were going to eat the salary.

Sorry.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

35 pages for absolutely nothing, and Jones's trade value gets destroyed even further because everyone knows just how desperate we really were.

I love the Cubs.

I'd say this thread is a good example of when keeping all "sort of related" conversation in one thread can be a bad idea.
No, it's the unrelated conversation (people taking up pages and pages posting pictures, even after a moderator asked them to stop) that turned this thread into a mess. If it had stayed on topic it would have been much easier to keep up with.

Anyone else think the Marlins are just trying to hold Hendry hostage up against the deadline of tonight's game and squeeze as much money out of him as possible?

Certainly possible. But we're down to 20 minutes. And if Selig has to approve of a deal, then its looking increasingly unlikely.

The Cubs could just DFA Jones and it buys them 10 days if there was anything holding up a transaction before the game.

That would give the Marlins (or any other team wanting him) so much leverage though.

Exactly. At that point the marlins could just say "Well, if you dont give us what we ask for, we'll just let you have to release him. Then you have to pay his whole salary. Sucks to be you"

Yep, they could pick him up, give up nothing, and pay him the league minimum.

No there is not exactly leverage to gain here. The Marlins don't say, "Oh, go ahead and release him then!" Using that theory, no player who is DFA'd would ever be traded but it's not quite that dramatic. If the reports on the trade are true, the Marlins pay about what they'd have to sign him for anyway. My point is there is no gun-to-your-head deadline as if it's the trading deadline for the Marlins to rest on. It's not like a DFA will suddenly tell teams we're not willing to keep Jacque around much longer. It's quite past that point. We're not talking about trying to trade a Carlos Zambrano that you DFA for convenience. It'd have very little effect on the return the Cubs receive and are looking for.

Now we're going to have to put Dempster on the DL even though I'm just about positive he doesn't need it.

If we were going to have to pay the majority of his contract and get a marginal prospect back, I'm not that sad that the trade died. I'd like to get rid of Jones, but not on terms that stick the Cubs with his contract. They might as well have just DFA'ed him.

I have a feeling that a lot of people are dissapointed just because they were desperate for something, anything, to happen.

They don't have to; they could just wait to officially call up Petrick. If they put Dempster on the DL then they still need to make a move because they'd only be at 11 pitchers, and Lou has pretty much made it clear they're going to have 12 pitchers come hell or high water. If Dempster really is injured that bad fine, but otherwise you don't go without your closer for 15 days because of a premature callup before a botched trade.

Apparently, we weren't that desperate because Hendry didn't bend over backwards to get the deal done (he obviously didn't think it was fair).

Those oblique injuries are really hard on a pitcher. Its probably better off to put Dempster on the DL and let that oblique heal rather than risking him hurting it even more.

I wonder what Jacque is thinking at this point.

"I hate my life"

So, wishful thinking/grasping for straws/whatever, but is there any chance that Hendry/MarlinsGM saw that they were running way too close to game time and just decided to put the deal on hold?

Nah, i know thats wrong because I remember hearing about a trade mid-game before.

Personally I enjoyed the pictures more than the other banter. It at least beat the constant "THIS GUY IS TROLLING LIES LIES LIES" posts.

Maybe the Mermaid was the dealbreaker?

I can't believe Hendry bothced this...good grief.

Hendry didn't botch anything. The deal as reported was a horrible one for Chicago. He was right not to pull the trigger too quickly, especially if any other team was remotely interested.

What if one of the other rumored teams saw the Marlins low-ball offer and realized they easily do better and still come out the winner in the deal?

Hendry didn't have to make a move today. If he can get a better deal than paying 75% salary and getting nothing in return, then he should hold out.
