Is it confirmed we traded EPatt or just a strong rumor?

If it's Barrett and EPatt for Linebrink and that other schumck, Cub fans should storm Tribune Tower with pitchforks and torches. Hendry is a flippin' moron if he pulled the trigger on that deal.

You're about the sixth person to make the complaint, but not one person has stated why its a bad deal with any amount of reason.

You want reason? Here is reason.

Barrett, like him or not, was the best catcher in our system. Our best option is now Bowen (assuming he's coming our way) and that's sad. EPatt is a top prospect in our system. That goes without saying.

So, if the rumors are true, we traded our top catcher (and not a bad one overall) and a top 5 prospect in our system for a good reliever and a backup catcher. A reliever that will maybe pitch 4-5 innings per week as opposed to a catcher who would play in 4-5 games per week, and a prospect that could have played second base for the next ten years.

Need more exlplination now, or are you good?

would that be the 2B prospect they've been trying in the OF? clearly someone in the Cubs system doesn't think he's a long term 2B

Another question is, why do the Cubs think they need a C? Between Hill, Soto and Blanco, aren't they ok enough without having to aquire more catchers?

maybe the Padres made it contingent that Bowen comes our way if they take Barrett

That doesn't make any sense, either. San Diego is clearly getting the best player in this deal. Why should they be in a position to dictate terms on who we take back?

We're not dealing Jones or Eyre here where we're at a disadvantage; Barrett does have value.

I'm fine with trading Barrett as long as we get something decent back for him. I didn't think the Cubs would resign him before the season started. However, he was far and away the best catcher on our roster.

I'm a little wary that we don't know who the trade is for, yet.

Linebrink is a good reliever, but EPatt should have been used as part of a better package. Our offense is also now weaker than it was 24 hours ago.

This is why I don't trust Hendry to deal anyone, ever. He's the king of trading low.

How many players actually get traded at their peak value? Not that many.

Barrett's wikipedia page was updated with his new team affiliation like the second this was announced. yeesh. Are there people just sitting arould waiting to update wikipedia pages the second something like that happens?

It's official. Barrett and some cash for Bowen and a high level prospect. No E-patt included or linebrink.

This I like better.

The reasons why I disliked the Barrett + E-Patt for Bowen + Linebrink deal...

-Patterson has a chance to develop into a legitimate above average 2B with some amount of power and speed. I like Fontenot and Theriot, don't get me wrong, but Patterson has a much higher ceiling than those two.

-Defense from a catcher is overrated. We already have three guys (Blanco, K. Hill, and Soto) who can play C every day who won't produce much offensively. While Bowen has improved offensively this season over a small sample size, his numbers don't suggest he'll be much of an upgrade over those three.

-Barrett's been slumping at the plate, but he has a good enough bat that he'll be able to turn it around in the near future. Part of the problem has been his poor performance in a short period of time this season, but to assume he won't turn around and be productive again is just folly.

-Linebrink is a good setup man, but he's on the wrong side of 30 and he pitches in the most pitcher-friendly park in the league. I'm leery of that.

Blanco could be out for the season. You still not want to get another pitcher because Prior or Wood could be coming back???

Even if Blanco is out for the season, they still have Hill and Soto. If one of them got hurt, backup C's are always available.

Prior and Wood would have nothing to do with trading for a pitching prospect.

Prior and Wood was a sarcastic analogy to the logic being used.

Hasn't Soto also been playing 1b since he hasn't been healthy? I don't think the Cubs think that he's a viable option at Catcher at the Major League level at this time, given health and development.

If it's Bowen and a low-level prospect, then I guess it's a wash at best.

Maybe just addition by subtraction.

It must have been sunnydoo; he couldn't wait for Barrett to be traded and is probably on Cloud 9 right now. :D

Don't forget that Barrett is a free agent at the end of the year - and it was VERY unlikely that he was going to return next year.

That's what I think is also key-anybody know of Bowen's contract status? The difference between Barrett and Bowen is not going to be that much this year.

BTW, Sporting News claims Bowen has a strong arm.

This is a comment from a poster responding to an article on MLB trade rumors:

I agree about Bard's defense but you are overlooking one big thing- Rob Bowen. As a back-up, he is one of the best defensive catchers in the bigs. Expect Bowen to be a defensive substitution in many games, start quite a few, and accumulate plenty of innings.

I would assume that Bowen is good defensively until I see something otherwise, but I'll try to find better sources on that.

Ok, so it's looking like Barrett for Bowen and Kyler Burke?

We're not getting much back, but at least EPatt is staying put. I would hope that Hendry has a move in mind to bring in some more offense, because now we have a definite black hole at C.
