You gotta wonder if the pitcher kind of psychs himself out in that situation. How many no hitters have been lost with 1 or 2 outs in the ninth?

I can't remember his name, but the last Cubs pitcher to throw a no-hitter, which was sometime in the '70s, lost a perfect game on a 3-2 count with 2 outs in the 9th.

Lugo (whose error in the 5th ruined the perfect game) is probably very happy that Stewart got the single.

Probably not, because if he would have made the play, Stewart never bats and it's a perfect game.

I was listening on ESPN radio on the way home and literally five seconds after they cut into Boston's radio broadcast Shannon Stewart got a basehit. Jerks.

Ha couldn't have happened to a bigger d-bag. I'm so glad lugo made that error and shannon got that hit. If that guy would have gotten a no hitter espn would have a "chasing nolan" across the bottom counting his no hitters or somethin.

Milt Pappas. Ruined by Bruce "Fat Slob" Froemming.

Anyone remember when Frank Castillo blew one in the 9th (possibly with 2 outs) at Wrigley against the Cards?

1995, IIRC.

It was either Bernard Gilkey or Ray Lankford that broke it up with a triple.

Think it was Gilkey, but I was 12 so who knows?

2004?

Eric Milton of the Phillies vs. the Cubs... Leading off the 9th, Barrett dumps a double to CF, Cubs somehow tie game and lose in extras.

I was at Midway Airport in one of the sports bars waiting for my plane to Vegas watching that.

Had to board my flight right when they tied.

Was watching the draft which they briefly interupted for it. Gammons called Stewart to break it up.

Schilling was throwing nothing but fastballs in the 9th. The announcers commented that he wasnt using any other pitches and was shaking off Varitek(?) who was catching. With Stewart being a primarily fastball hitter and a veteran, it really wasnt all that shocking.

?

That's the point. If Lugo makes the play, sure, he'd love for Schilling to have a perfect game. But since he had already made the error, he's got to be thinking (to himself) "don't let my error be the only thing keeping from Schilling from getting a perfect game." So when Stewart gets a hit to break up the no hitter, it also let Lugo off the hook for his error.

I'm pretty positive that it was Gilkey. I remember the RFer diving even though he came up like 5 feet short of the ball too. Who was in right that day? I don't remember it being Sammy.

Sammy was in RF, Scott Bullett in CF, and Luis Gonzalez in LF. You were right that it was Gilkey.

A few days later, we were treated to what I still think is the greatest Cubs win I ever watched on TV, and thanks to a last-gasp eight game winning streak, we managed to stay alive in the wild card race until the next-to-last day of the season.

Of course, hardly anyone besides me saw any of it, because it seemed that everyone besides me had quit the game after the strike.

I also believe Chuck Rainey once had a no-hitter broken up in the 9th when he was with the Cubs, but I don't recall whether it was with 2 out. And Jose Guzman's first start as a Cub (1993) was a no-hitter bid broken up with 2 out in the 9th (Otis Nixon was the villan).

Well at least this will give ESPN something to talk about besides Lebron James.

No kidding. You'd think they'd get tired of kissing his arse after a while.

They're back to questioning him after last night.
