I listened to the last 5-10 minutes. Nothing more than we already know. He's trying to make a comeback, loves Chicago, etc.

The NYT probably gave us more and better info.

Actually I thought the interview was pretty good. I didn't hear all of it, but there was a part where they asked him if he thinks about retiring and Kerry's response was, in my opinion, very thoughtful.

He says he thinks about retiring every day. But he finds a reason not to every time. He mentioned his son, how he doesn't want to show him that he's a quitter. It was touching, for lack of a better word.

I really hope Kerry is able to make it back -- he's always been a good guy and he deserves some good luck for a change. I'm still rooting for him.

Same here. Kerry (to the best of my memory) has never given the public a reason to doubt that he's a solid human being. Can't see anyone not pullin' for the guy. Good luck Mr. 30-years-old-in-10-days Wood, you'll need it, but I know you have it in you.

Re Kerry's thoughts about retiring, here is a quote from the NYT article:

[Kerry] considered quitting after the disappointment of spring training. But he says he decided otherwise in large part because of his 17-month-old son Justin, and the slight chance that his career will last long enough for Justin to get a taste of the big-league atmosphere. “I want him to be around it,” Wood says. “I want him to be able to come into the clubhouse. I want to take him into the stadium and hit fly balls to him. I want him to be able to do that. I’m not going to be able to do that if I don’t at least give it a shot.” ... “I don’t want to look back on my career and say, ‘You know what, I gave up when I was 29 or 30 years old.’

I think we'll see Kerry on the mound before the end of the season. Can't wait to see that standing o.

Yeah, I can understand his thinking. He knows it's unlikely that he can come back and have a good career, but if he leaves now the doubts in the back of his mind if he could have done it or not would always be there. He at least has to try until there is no chance left of a comeback.

Right. For many reasons I hope he comes back, but as far as his son, I have a feeling he'd be an asset to many teams and would be having his son in that situation either way, but I know what he's really saying... he wants it to be as a player, considering his age and all.

I like him, too. I think when he comes back he will give it 110 percent ... he really wants to be out there, you know it, and this has all got to be the most FRUSTRATING thing in the world for him.

I didn't hear any time frame, but at the end of the interview Kap said something like "wouldn't it be great if Cubs get a nice run going here and in July Kerry Wood is back on the mound helping the team out". He responded with "yes that would be great".

yeah....i hope to see him contribute in a positive way in a cubs uni soon....if only to shut up the kerry wood haters.......he seems like a good guy and it would be nice to see him play again.....

Maybe we can keep him around as some "novelty", but I really question what he can bring out of the pen. I'm assuming that he would be able to make 2 appearences per week...3 tops. Then we would have to overtax the rest of the pen to make up for this.

That being said, I'd rather have a roster spot dedicated for a weekly Wood appearence over Scott Eyre.

With a 12 man staff, 2-3 appearances per week from one guy is not going to overtax anybody else.

True. But don't you think at some point the organization will come to its senses and revert to an 11-man staff?

No. They've been doing it this way for years. They seem to prefer it. Whenever they go to 11 man briefly, they quickly go back to 12.

The only way I could see them go back to 11 is if the starters consistently go 6+ strong and 5 of the relievers start pitching really well, consistently.

IIRC Lou said that Kerry would not get called up until he proved he could pitch on consecutive days; that would imply 3-4 appearances per week.

I didn't mean this year; I've stopped hoping for logical decisions by the current management. I am, however, hoping things become cogent next year. But, of course, that would mean retaining Wood again.
