A quick check on Pie's recent play. I think he'll be up soon, even if the rumor here is false.

Felix Pie is hitting .357 with two doubles, two triples, a home run and eight RBI in the past 10 games with Triple-A Iowa.

(Updated 05/31/2007).

Fantasy Analysis

For the season with Iowa, he's hitting .397 in 29 games. It appears his taste of the majors is leaving a lasting effect. If an injury befalls anyone in the Cubs outfield, expect Pie to return with a vengeance, making him a solid Rotisserie player in NL-only leagues.

It seems highly unlikely that the rumor is false, as Pie was not in the lineup last evening for AAA Iowa.

Game starts in a few hours - he'd already be at the ballpark wouldn't he? I'm not saying anyone is wrong here, I would've thought we'd know by now. Maybe not.

Murton is so much better than Pagan, it's almost hilarious, because Murton may not even be average overall.

Murton is so much better than Pagan

He's not playing like it.

You're judging Pagan off a couple of weeks in the majors. He was struggling in AAA before coming up (I think his AVG was somewhere around .255 or so) and he's always been a career minor leaguer. If this guy is starting on your team excessively, then you know your team is not a very good one.

kroeger is the guy who should be getting a shot at rf when they finally trade/dfa jones. he's hitting .361 with a 1.050 ops at aa and he hits left handed. i'm not sure what they will do with murton.

The most impressive thing about Kroeger is his relatively low strikeout rate.

He has a very high BABIP, but there's plenty of room for that to come down and still have a good stat line.

He's also been rather lucky so far this season.

I like the .067 IsoD, but still, something tells me he's not going to be anything more than an average everyday starter in the majors.

The Score is reporting Pie is in CF and batting 2nd today!
finally a reason to make me watch this game.. something to root for..

I agree that you play Pie every day. He's meant to be your everyday CF going forward and you let him grow into it now. However, there's legit concern that he's hitting .156/.229/.219 against lefties (and .256/.322/.327 last year). Pagan was awful against lefties last year but has been decent this year.

I don't know that it's really a"legit concern." It's a small sample size. And he wasn't being played everyday. He's a young player. Hitting both left and right hand pitching has never really been a problem with him.

I also think that part of those numbers reflect not playing everyday. Pie was not used properly when up the last time. IMHO, he's a better player then both Jones and Pagan. For that reason, I see no issue with letting him play everyday and developing further in the ML. I also believe that it makes the Cubs a better team. (Especially defensively)

Why would it not be a legitimate concern? His minor league numbers this year and last year do not represent all that small of a sample size. His numbers against lefties the last couple years (2005 in West Tenn, 2006 in Iowa, 2007 in Iowa and 2007 in Chicago) are .240 BA / .297 OBP / .345 SLG. I don't see why you think this is no problem. The fact that he's doing even worse most recently is not very encouraging. Again, I'd play him every day too but I'm not sure how someone would dismiss this.

I couldn't find his splits prior to this year in Iowa. This splits are poor this year vs LHP in Iowa, but it's only 32 AB which is a small sample size. His MLB splits are small sample sizes as well.

I'm not saying that Pie is going to hit LHP as good as RHP. What I am saying is that he gives the Cubs a better chance to win because he's the best available player for CF. And I do believe that he'll hit LHP eventually.

perhaps not but:

a) we'll never know what he can do unless they give him a chance

b) an average everyday starter would be a big upgrade from the current production.

if kroeger or colvin are in the cubs outfield in 2008, the cubs are in big trouble.

Why do you say that? Colvin's holding his own in Daytona after skipping Peoria.

He still wouldn't be expected to jump three levels by next year. So if he is in the Cubs outfield next year that would be out of desperation.

Kroeger is also nearly 25 years old, hopefully Pie will play everyday in Chicago so there's a roster spot for Kroeger to try to hit in Iowa.
