They are both a couple of idiots. It's a lot harder to replace Z than Barrett. A lot of people are talking like Z's career is over. He's still a young man with his best years ahead of him. Some people take longer to mature. I'm not ready to throw him on the trash heap just yet even if has been pretty bad this year. He's not the first to choke during a contract year.

Barrett on the other hand is just flat useless as a baseball player when he doesn't hit...and he isn't hitting. He really needs to be a DH. The problem though is I can't see us getting anything for him. Why would any GM give us anything. They know the Cubs probably can't keep him around this team plus he's going to be a FA at the end of the year. Hendry may have to release him just to keep peace in the clubhouse. That would be drastic but stranger things have happened.

Pretty sad day in Cubdom all around.

They both will be here the rest of the year. Barrett will not be around Z ever. Next year Barrett probably won't be resigned. Even though MB is not hitting like were used to he's still a better option then Blanco or the guy from AAA.

you dont call it a suspension.

the MLBPA is not dumb.

Exactly. They'd have a pretty open and shut case with the greivence they would surely file.

I disagree. Z's best years are behind him. Contract negotiations have nothing to do with his loss of velocity. He clearly isn't the same pitcher and every year he loses a bit more of his fastball.

I caught what Theriot was telling Barrett on the late BT edition. Ryan said "that was bush league."

Dont know if he was talking about Z pointing at his head and starting it or Barrett pointing at the scoreboard, but it got Michaels attention.

I'm guessing it had to do with Zambrano trying to punch him in the face over a passed ball. Just a guess.

They also said Barrett has 2 black eyes, a busted lip, and got thrown into a locker with his face from what they are saying.

Geez, did Barrett just get completely crushed or is Zambrano banged up at all too?

I guess there was a reason why Z needed Blanco to be his personal catcher.

Geez. Z is an idiot.

I got $20 on Barrett in the rematch.

You lose.

The Chicago Cubs are the mockery of professional baseball right now.

Jesus, either Zambrano is a way superior fighter, or the more likely case, Barrett went in the clubhouse to make amends and Z ambushed him.

I read on another site that Dave Kaplan said that is exactly what happened. According to Dave, Zambrano was shouting at Barrett from the clubhouse and telling him to be a man and fight, Barrett went down to calm him down, and then Zambrano attacked him again.

Zambrano has always been one of my favorite Cubs. But after yesterday's incident, I no longer like the guy and am embarrassed that he's on the Cubs.

Z could easily be put on the DL. His velocity has been down all year. The Cubs could just say it's the team's medical judgment that 15 days rest is the best way to help Z regain velocity. The Player's Union might bitch about it but they wouldn't be able to do anything to stop it.

That was my thought all along. If Barrett really wanted to fight, I think he probably could have dealt some damage. I know that he was big into some type of martial arts so I'm sure he's not a complete pushover.

I don't know. Z is a monster and by looking at the vid that was posted on here and on chicagosports.com Barrett didn't want a piece of Z. Z is one scary dude and Barrett is no pushover but if I were to guess Z wins hands down.

i have to admit, last night, when i first heard about this, i was ... intrigued to say the least. finally some excitement with the cubs! but now, as more details surface, it kinda just makes me sick.

Anyone hear Z's interview at Wrigley this morning? They were teasing it on the radio but I think I missed it

I caught part of it. Z wasn't suspended, just fined. He takes full responsibility. I guess he had some family issues or something come up a few days ago - Barrett was the first guy to come and offer help. They're still friends.

From Olney's blog (must be ESPN insider I think):

This is one version of what took place inside the dugout and clubhouse thereafter:

Zambrano came walking down the dugout, and started saying aloud to Barrett that he needed to keep his head in the game, while pointing at his own head. Barrett walked toward Zambrano and asked, "Why are you doing that?" Meaning, challenging a teammate in the dugout.

Zambrano persisted, Barrett pointed toward the field and made mention of the fact that Zambrano wasn't having a stellar day, either, and instantly they were pushing and shoving and slapping. Piniella sent Zambrano to the clubhouse, and Barrett remained in the dugout.

But Zambrano continued to shout at Barrett, at one point challenging him to finish the fight. Barrett got up off the bench and walked back toward the clubhouse, and again asked: "Why are you doing this?" Zambrano then fired a punch and began flailing away, throwing "many" punches, according to one version, slamming Barrett against a locker; the catcher apparently is bruised on both eyes, and he drove himself to the hospital for treatment. "It was just crazy," said one witness. "The whole thing is crazy."

And all he gets is a fine? This is the most disgusted I've ever been with the Cubs.

At a minimum I think he needs to be ordered to take anger management training and be benched for at least one start. A fine is a joke; this calls for substantially more than a slap on the wrist.

He can, and should, take all the responsibility for it, but he's not going to win back a lot of fans -- myself included. What he did yesterday was simply inexcusable.

Typical Cubs... Slap on the wrist and sweep it under the rug. If Zambrano would have done that to another team's player he would have been suspended for multiple starts, yet attacking his own player TWICE only warrants a fine?

I really, really need to find a new favorite team.
