A lot of people, including me, badly wanted Joe brought in to manage the team this offseason. Say he was brought in instead of Lou. How would things be different at this point in the season?

It had been said that bringing in Girardi would be a signal that we were rebuilding, but I don't see how hiring the defending manager of the year would have sent that signal at all.

So, what are we missing out on with Lou instead of Joe?

Girardi would be a better manager, but we're stuck with Lou for three years unless he quits. We've seen how willing Hendry is to admit to mistakes.

I can't imagine Lou being here 3 years. I'm guessing he's a Yankee next year.

I've followed baseball since 1983. Manager's (save for Dusty Baker) rarely make or break a team.

The problem with the Cubs (team and organization) has never been the manager. It's always been the numbnuts running the show. Dallas Green had the right idea, but higher ups ran him off.

Bobby Valentine has always been a favorite of mine.

I mentioned him on more than one occasion when Dusty was in "lame duck" status.

Where is Bobby V anyway? Is he still managing in Japan?

Yeah, I think his contract is up after this year... ::mind wanders::

Good luck finding him though. He's incognito. Crazy ass gaijin, that Valentine.

I followed since the 60's.....and you are absolutely correct.

The biggest problem has always been offense with the Cubs.......they never score enough runs. When they do.....they compete.....but the lack of offense (at critical times) contributed to the overuse of Wood and Prior....and many other pitchers through the years.

It continues. Yes the bullpen stinks.....also a frequent problem....but more than anything we have lacked consistent offense through the years.

It probably won't be Hendry's decision, because Hendry will most certainly be out when a new owner takes over. And the new GM may well want a different manager.

If I were going to buy the Cubs, I'd probably be watching this situation closely. I would probably come to the conclusion that everyone in this organization, save the scouting department, has bat [poop] for brains, and needs to be fired. McDonough should be able to go back to marketing, but he's about the only one I would keep.

nice to read a little reasonable thinking.

FWIW, the Cubs have had managers much worse than Baker during my lifetime. Don Baylor was worse for one. Every manager between Frye and Riggleman was worse (except Zimmer, who was probably just barely better). Bruce Kimm was the worst manager ever to lead a professional sports team.

poor Jim Riggleman. I imagine he could ahve been quite good with any sort of talent on his team aside from Grace, Sosa and Beck
