why not PH Marquis there and get the sac bunt?

Cause playing for a single run when it's a tie in the top of the 9th is a horrible idea?

But even Lou had to know that the DP was gonna happen :)

Ok, let's call up Iowa for a week and send these guys to Des Moines.

Who's doing well in Iowa's rotation/Pen right now? Hell, anyone opening eyes in Tennessee?

Hell Id check the California Penal league at this point

If, and that's a big if, the Cubs get to the tenth, they'll have Theriot, Lee, Barrett up.

If we can't win it in the 10th (if we get there), I can't imagine we're going to win in later innings.

so you're saying in this scenario, that there will be a groundout, single, then double play?

How do you figure?

There was a study on BP about a year back about how to best leverage sac bunts. Home teams can use them to pad small leads in later innings or to break ties, but it's really a bad idea for the visiting team to use them unless they're already sporting a lead and just tacking on that 3rd or 4th run.

Earl Weaver used to say "don't play for one run unless you're sure that run will win you the ballgame." While that might not have been strictly true, playing for a single run in the top of 9 isn't a good idea when we don't know if the home team is going to be able to score 2.
