So who's coming down or already in St. Louis? I just checked into the Hilton Ballpark. I left Springfield early this morning and got down early enough to catch two of the First Pitch tickets. I think I'm going to take a nap and meet a buddy for lunch at some place called Lesters. Apparently its some new sports bar down here with a $21 overstuffed corned beef sandwich. I think I'll wear my fat pants.

Where you sitting?

I'm in section 367. I bought these tickets from a charity group, so I'm sure I'll be surrounded by Cards fans.

The First Pitch tickets are the ones where you pay $11 for a voucher for two tickets at 9am the day of a game. Then at the start of the game at a certain gate they hand you a sealed envelope with two random tickets. They could be SRO, they could be great box seats. But usually they're the tickets the visiting team gives back in sections 257 and 259 so there might be some Cubs fans around me.

I'm sitting in 345 on Saturday and 593 on Sunday.

Just dont get swept. One game is fine, win that and move on to the next series. 2 games would be Superduper.

This is the same Cardinals team that has weaknesses in both pitching and offense, right? After losing 2 of 3 to them last weekend, we need to take 2 of 3 from them this weekend.

They've only won 3 games at home this year...please god don't let us let them double that number this weekend.

Game Notes.

The Cubs, looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since April 6-7, begin a 6-game road trip with the first of 3 games against the Cardinals before heading to Pittsburgh for a 3-game set … Chicago – who topped Milwaukee, 9-3, on Wednesday at Wrigley Field – went 2-4 in their just-completed 6-game homestand against the Cardinals (1-2) and Brewers (1-2).

Derrek Lee has reached base safely in his first 21 games played this season, hitting safely in 19 of those contests … the last Cub to reach base in his first 21 games of a season was Ron Santo, who began the 1973 campaign by reaching base safely in 22 consecutive contests

Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee (14 RBI) and third baseman Aramis Ramirez (15 RBI) have combined for 29 RBI this season, that’s the most of any team’s corner infielders in the National League and second-best in the Majors … the Yankees Alex Rodriguez (34 RBI) and Josh Phelps (4 RBI) have combined for 38 RBI this season.

Lee and Ramirez have collected 31.5-percent of the team’s 92 RBI on the season … throw in catcher Michael Barrett, who leads the club with 17 RBI, and Mark DeRosa (15 RBI) and that quartet has combined for 61 RBI, or 66.3-percent of the club total.

More from the game notes...

Chicago is limiting its opponents to a .127 batting average (8-for-63) with runners in scoring position over the team’s last 7 games dating to April 19 … that’s the lowest mark in the Majors over that span (Philadelphia is second with a .164 opponent average with RISP) … on the season Cubs pitchers have held opponents to a .193 average with RISP (38-for-197), second-best in the Majors (New York Mets, .183).

Cubs batters are hitting .257 (48-for-187) with RISP on the year, but just .181 (13-for-72) over their last 7 games.

With RISP, Cliff Floyd (6-for-14) and Derrek Lee (9-for-21) are both hitting .429 … the rest of the club is batting .204 (31-for-152).

The Cubs have used 16 different lineups in the first 21 games of the season including a different batting order in each of the last 11 contests heading into today’s series opener against the Cardinals … the last time Chicago used the same lineup (No.1-8 hitters) was April 13-14 vs. Cincinnati.

The Cubs have used 7 different hitters in the No. 2 hole … Ryan Theriot’s started 6 games there (2-4) while others in the No. 2 spot include Jacque Jones (2-2), Cliff Floyd (1-3), Matt Murton (1-2), Mark DeRosa (1-1), Cesar Izturis (1-0) and Felix Pie (0-1).

The Cubs have three starting pitchers in the National League top-10 in opponent batting average against, including tonight’s starter Jason Marquis, who ranks 10th, limiting opponents to a .200 batting average.

Cubs left-handers Rich Hill (.146) and Ted Lilly (.178) rank second and fifth, respectively … San Francisco’s Matt Cain leads all NL pitchers with a .120 batting average against.

Overall, Cubs starters are holding the opponent to a .226 batting average (107-474), tops in the NL and third in the Majors behind Oakland (.214) and the White Sox (.217).
