Soriano said that he would consider moving to left field and allow Pie to play center if the rookie continues to play well.

"Whatever the manager (Lou Piniella) wants to do with us. ... I played left field last year," Soriano said. "All three outfield positions are the same. You have to catch the ball. Any position Lou wants me to play is OK. Felix is a special kid. He's a very good athlete and a very good player."

Murton must be sitting on the bench thinking Soriano considers him chopped liver. I like the fact that he's taking to and looking after felix. He shouldn't be treating other teammates like they're nothing in order to do it though.

Let the coach figure out who plays where and when, quit trying to play coach yourself, Sori. You're a newb on this team and you haven't done jack to earn your pay here yet, so in the mean time, sit down and shut up.

Lou asked Soriano if he wanted to move to left field a couple of days ago. Soriano said he didn't need to, but now he's clarifying and saying that he will if Lou wants him to. I don't exactly seem the harm in that.

Someone probably asked him if he would move to LF if Pie stuck, and he said yes and talked about how much he likes Pie.

Take it easy.

I guess I can see why you think that might be a slight to Murton, but I really didn't take it as being so. One almost HAS to believe that Murton, come 2008, will be the full-time right-fielder for the Cubs. On the other hand, I think this shows that Soriano is a team player, and is willing to play the outfield position which he is best suited for.

I personally hope Pie never plays in Iowa ever again.

I didn't know he'd been asked previously to move to LF. I don't like the idea of someone who is new here and hasn't lived up to his hype yet trying to exert influence in the clubhouse. If he's offering that up on his own, then no, it's not an overreaction. If he's already trying to exert his influence in the clubhouse, then it's not too much of a reach to call him Sammy Jr. If it's an innocent quote taken out of a larger conversation (i.e. he wasn't offering that on his own), then yes, I'm overreacting. I don't want Murton or anyone else to lose playing time because of Soriano's (or any other player's) influence.

BTW also, the reporter was the only one said that he would move to left field. If you look at what Soriano said, he said he would move to either left or right-the only time he mentioned left specifically was when he said he played left last year, which simply meant that he was willing to switch positions like he did from left to center this year.

Wait a minute.

Sori thinks that he will just move over to left? I think Uncle Cliffy has something to say about that. Maybe he better dust off the old infield glove and try and earn some time at 2nd.

If he were to move, I'd rather see him move to RF than 2B. We already know he can't play 2B, we already have two other LFers, and we already have a RFer that wouldn't mind being traded nor would any of the fans mind seeing him traded either.

Fine with me if Murton stays in RF. Although I'd prefer Soriano in RF and Murton in LF.

I can see that. Soriano's arm > Murton's arm.

Yeah, Murt's played right the last two days, so putting Fonz there would probably affect Cliff and Jacque just as much as Murton, probably more.

I'd be shocked if both Cliff and Jacque are on this team come August 1st.

I wouldn't be that shocked if Cliff Floyd is still on this team come August 1st, seeing as how it will probably be in the DL capacity. Jones on the other hand...

Wow dudes, this is as bad as the "I love Lou but his hairdo is wack" thread.

Can we please relax and not look for reasons to fly off the handle about everything?

Posted (edited)

Since I think the quotes are open to interpretation -- and Soriano does say he'd be willing to move to LF or RF -- I changed the thread title.

I think Soriano was just making it clear that he welcomes Pie to the team and is flexible to playing other OF positions if Piniella asks.

Pie will not have to worry about housing in Chicago. Soriano has an extra room.

"That's my best friend on the team, the first guy I met when I came to the Chicago Cubs," Soriano said. "I'm very happy for him that he's in the big leagues."

Pie and Soriano have the exact same physique.

I think Pie and Soriano must have been combined at one time, only to split and form 2 seperate baseball players.

(in a non-gay voice-not that there is anything wrong with that)

I think Pie has more muscle definition in his arms and upper body.
