Pie and Soriano have the exact same physique.

Pie: 6'2" 170 lbs.

Soriano: 6'1" 180 lbs.

We're going to gave great speed and arms in two of our OF positions for a long time to come. Did you see Pie rounding second on that liner into the gap. A bobble or a weird bounce off the wall and he was on third. That guy can fly.

I would guess Felix is bigger than 170 at this point. My guess would be about 6'2" 180. I think Soriano has to be pretty close to 6'2" also.

I bet they are BFF.

Paul Sullivan / Tribune

Soriano and Pie embraced in the Cubs clubhouse before the game.

Soriano said he would invite Pie to stay at his house when the team returns from its two-game trip to Atlanta, which begins Wednesday.

"That's my best friend on the team, the first guy I met on the Chicago Cubs when I came here," Soriano said.

"I'm very excited and very happy for him. I'm very proud what he did today in his first game. Very impressive."

Soriano said that he would consider moving to left field and allow Pie to play center if the rookie continues to play well.

"Whatever the manager (Lou Piniella) wants to do with us. ... I played left field last year," Soriano said. "All three outfield positions are the same. You have to catch the ball. Any position Lou wants me to play is OK. Felix is a special kid. He's a very good athlete and a very good player."

Murton must be sitting on the bench thinking Soriano considers him chopped liver. I like the fact that he's taking to and looking after felix. He shouldn't be treating other teammates like they're nothing in order to do it though.

Let the coach figure out who plays where and when, quit trying to play coach yourself, Sori. You're a newb on this team and you haven't done jack to earn your pay here yet, so in the mean time, sit down and shut up.

It's been said already, but I echo those that see your comments as an overreaction. Soriano being amiable to changing his position is not a slight to Matt Murton nor is he trying to play the role of manager. In fact, some would say that the Cubs moving Murton to RF is an attempt to get him into the OF on a consistent basis:

Phil Rogers / Tribune

Piniella says he's going to play his best team... Teams aren't going to stop running on Jones, which is why Piniella has moved him from right field to left field.

The Cubs need Matt Murton to emerge as an adequate right fielder because long term they almost certainly will wind up with Pie playing center field and Alfonso Soriano moving back to left. That's their best alignment but questions about Murton and the desire to keep Cliff Floyd as part of the outfield mix could lead them to putting Pie, their best outfielder, in right field for the rest of this season once Soriano's hamstring has recovered from the injury he suffered Monday night.

For Pie to stay, Jones probably has to go.

Gordon Wittenmyer / Suntimes

''Whatever he wants to do with us is OK,'' Soriano said, referring to manager Lou Piniella and adding that he'd be willing to move to left field if necessary. ''Because I played last year in left field, and this year I play center field. All three outfield positions are the same to me. You still have to catch the ball.

''Any of the three outfield spots he wants to put me is OK.''

I don't think the conclusion that 98navigator made was that crazy. Its the same thing I thought of when I read the article. I'm sure Soriano didn't mean any harm, and Pie is his buddy, but its kinda weird to volunteer to push a player out of the starting lineup.

Imagine if Mark DeRosa said "Hey, I love that Eric Patterson kid, I'll gladly move to 3B so he can play everyday"

Soriano prefaced his remarks by saying whatever Lou wanted him to do was fine with him. Soriano played LF previously and Lou has already talked with him once about whether moving back there would make him more comfortable. It's not like he volunteered to play 1B out of the blue to make room for his good buddy.

I don't think Soriano's willingness to change positions is pushing anyone out of the starting lineup. As it stands, Soriano is the CF (Pie is a substitute at this point), Murton is the RF, and there is a rotation in LF. The example you gave is a little different because Aramis is the established third baseman.

Besides, let's keep in mind that Soriano was merely answering the question about, possibly, moving from CF if Pie stays with the ML team. I think his answer was more about doing whatever is best for the team/what Lou suggests.

Actually, I think Murton will be the future 4th OF. He will stay until Colvin is ready. Many people feel Colvin will be much better than Murton. who knows what they will do.....Cubs right now have a glut of OF. I think Jones will be traded. Floyd is still useful as a pinch hitter.

That is exactly what his answer was, I don't know how anyone could infer something else.

I hated the idea of trading Jones, because I didn't think Pie was ready to produce enough to make up for his numbers. But if Floyd is going to continue to hit the ball the way he has (he'd have amazing numbers with some luck), then a Soriano (assuming he remembers how to play), Pie, Floyd/Murton OF will be productive enough.

that would be awesome

Except for the part where Mark Derosa plays 3rd instead of Aramis.

I think it's great that he's saying that he'd move to make room for Pie. Not so great that he's saying he'd move to a position where there are already two people fighting for playing time. I wonder how Floyd and Murton reacted to those comments.

I think i need to find and bump my Soriano and Pie BFF thread. Pie is living in spare room in Soriano's place.

Leave Pie in CF move Soriano to RF, Floyd and Murton to LF and trade Jones.

We have a winner. Theriot may platoon some with Pie, at least for awhile. I think this was the plan all along, they just weren't sure Pie was ready yet and no one offered much for Jones.

Soriano

Pie/ Theriot

Lee

Ramirez

Floyd/ Murton

Barrett

DeRosa

Izturis

This is the "real" 2007 Cubs lineup.

I think Murton was still in shock when he zoned out and forgot to run home twice in the 8th inning.

How else could he say it? He was asked about being moved out of center to make room for Pie and said he was open to the idea. Logically, he would have to go to a different position for that to happen (Soriano is not going to the bench), thus bumping someone from the lineup.
