seriously, Ronny Cedeno has no business being on this team. He was one of the worst hitters in baseball last year, and he again looks lost to start this year. His plate discipline is abysmal, and his fielding is even inconsistent.

Bring up Fontenot. He can fill in at SS in a pinch, but you've already got two guys on the roster who can play SS reasonably well (Izturis, Theriot). Fontenot has a career .364 OBP in the minors, and had a solid line of 296/375/450/825 at Iowa last year. He's unlikely to be completely lost at the plate, because he has a good eye. At the very least he'll be able to contribute by drawing some walks, which is more than can be said for Ronny. And, he's never going to be more than a utility guy, so you're not harming his long-term development by calling him up and giving him sparse playing time.

Fontenot please!!!

Cedeno has shown over and over again that he has no clue what he's doing with the bat. He's just wasting a space on the roster.

I was onboard with him being on the opening day roster because he did pretty well in ST. Unfortunately he hasnt carried that success in the bigs at all. That last at bat today where he was caught looking on strike 3 was pretty bad. The pitch caught way to much plate to let go. Yeah, a move is in order.

Cedeno is horrible, he has no place on a big league team. The quicker the Cubs get rid of him, the better they'll be.

I think the Ohman experiment needs to be ended. There is no business for him to be on a major league roster, by my count. He's given up runs in 3 consecutive outings, walked in 2 runs, given up a 3 run homer in a meaningless game, gave up the winning run in this game, I think I"m convinced that we've done all we can with this...player.

It's hard to disagree on Cedeno. He doesn't belong on any team that seriously expects to contend, even as a 25th man.

Fontenot would bring more value to the plate and wouldn't hurt them with the glove, and he's just as cheap.

Ohman is a LOOGY. It sucks that he gave up the winning run, but he's not supposed to be used for anything more than one guy at a time. Given his track record, it's too early to be jettisoning him.

Ronny had what about to two decent months - 80 AB's in 2005 but that was spread out over the whole year and April of 2006. Other than that, he's horrible. I agree. Get rid of him. I prefer a middle infield of Theriot and DeRosa but I won't be angry to see Izturis in there at short only because I know it would be worse if Ronny was in there.

Can it really be described as the "Ohman experiment" when he appeared in 69 games in '05 with a 2.91 ERA and in 78 games in '06 with a 4.13 ERA? Those really aren't bad numbers for middle reliever / loogy. It probably justifies giving him more than 4 innings before throwing him under the bus.

Cedeno on the other hand, is a wasted roster spot right now. Put him at SS at AAA for a full season and see if he can develop some better plate discipline.

I'm sorry, but I used to be in support of the LOOGY position... but now that I look at it, what kind of value does a LOOGY really have to a team? Ok, it's great that you can get lefties out, but it's not very common you get a big bulk of lefthanded hitters to the plate. I'd rather have Rocky Cherry up here who could possibly get through an inning rather than have Ohman in the bullpen wasting a spot because he can only get a certain type of hitter out.

EDIT: And yes, Ronny is more lost than ever at the plate right now. That 3rd strike was right down the pipe.

He's fantastically bad. I would very much have rather seen Ronny go back to AAA instead of Gooz. It leaves us kind of short on IF bench, though, especially with DeRosa's aching back.

I want to like the kid, but he just doesn't have much skill at the plate.

He's yet another horrid offensive SS that can make defensive plays that old time baseball guys seem to value for no statistical reason.
I don't think that's why he is on the team. I think everyone who wanted him on the team hoped he could return to his 2005 level of play, which should be obvious by now that it was an incredible fluke. He needs to go. Send him to AAA, see if he can adjust to getting not-so-regular playing time because he has no future other than possibly that of a utility player (with someone else). Hopefully he gets a plane ticket to Des Moines tonight.

I can't echo the same sentiments about Ohman though. I wouldn't cut/demote him because he's that bad. He's coming off of two solid years, and no one ever expected much out of him other than serving strictly as a loogy. He still has some value there, and is just going through a rough spot. If you cut/demote him, you do it because there's a better alternative (Cherry? time will tell...), not because he's been bad.

cedeno's the least of the cubs' worries.

He just cost us a game, and it won't be the last. He's not the only concern, but he's pretty high on the list. Every time he gets in the game it's badness all around.
